Assyrian students of the Chaldean Catholic Church’s Shamoun Al-Safa School in Mosul, in the 1960s, pose proudly alongside an over 2,700-year-old Assyrian lamassu at Nineveh’s Nergal Gate, standing before their ancestral heritage. Tragically, the ancient lamassu was deliberately destroyed by the Islamic State (ISIS) in 2015, which viewed it as idolatrous. The Nergal Gate itself was later destroyed by ISIS in 2016. 💔🏛️

🏛️ This photograph captures more than a school visit — it captures a meeting between generations of Assyrian history. Young Assyrians from Mosul stand beside the monumental lamassu of ancient Nineveh, a guardian that had watched over the ancient Assyrian capital for more than 2,700 years. 🪽

For modern Assyrians, monuments like this are not merely archaeological remains. They are a tangible connection to the history, civilization, and heritage of their ancestors. ✨

💔 More than half a century after this photograph was taken, ISIS deliberately destroyed the ancient lamassu in 2015. The destruction also struck other priceless Assyrian heritage, including Kalhu (Nimrud) and artifacts in the Mosul Museum. The Nergal Gate itself was destroyed in 2016.

The devastation went far beyond ancient monuments. Assyrian Christian churches, manuscripts, homes, and communities across Mosul and the Nineveh Plains were destroyed, looted, or abandoned, while more than 100,000 Assyrian Christians were forced to flee their ancestral homeland during the ISIS offensive of 2014. ⛪📜💔

📸 Today, this photograph preserves something that can never be recreated: a generation of Assyrians standing face-to-face with the heritage of ancient Assyria before its destruction.

What was carved in stone could be destroyed — but its history, memory, and identity endure. 🕊️❤️

One of the earliest recorded theological debates between a Christian Patriarch & a Muslim Caliph was between Timothy I & Caliph Mahdi in 781 AD.

They debated over two sessions in Baghdad. Timothy I, an Assyro-chaldean from Adiabene, was the Patriarch of the Church of The East. This is one of the earliest Churches in Christendom & is in fact the same Church that Sam Shamoun traces his heritage to (@BruceSaiFun).

Keep in mind this took place just as the Islamic Conquest had consolidated its grip over Mesopotamia & the Near East, where the Assyrian population had previously lived under Persian rule. It's not exactly a "fair and open debate", but nonetheless one that spread rapidly.

The caliph asked the standard Muslim objections: how can God have a son? Do Christians worship three gods? Why venerate the cross? Was Jesus crucified? Has the Christian scripture been corrupted?

All this is to say...

Muslim-Christian debate is ancient. What @sneako and his new breed of salafi LARPS do is not debate. They are searching for identity online by third world farming. It's something akin to the lonely kid with a broken family who joins the cult telling him he can dominate the non-believers. الملك البديل في بلاد الرافدين

ويعرف أيضاً باسم الملك التعويض (الشار بوخي). لقد كان للملك قدسية كبيرة لدى العراقيين القدماء لكونه ممثل الآلهة على الأرض ولاعتقادهم بأن رفاهيتهم ورفاهية بلادهم تعتمد على سلالة الملك.
فقد كان كل خطر يهدد حياته يعد خطراً يهدد أمن البلاد وسلامتها وكان العراقيون والكهنة يتنبؤون بحدوث خطر بالبلاد قبل فترة مناسبة من حدوثه عن طريق تفسير الأحلام والظواهر الطبيعية كالكسوف والخسوف وقراءة كبد الحيوان المضحى به وقراءة الفال فيخبروا الملك بما تضمره له الأيام القادمة. ولما كان الملك وكيلاً للإله وممثله على الأرض إذ لا بد من حمايته والحفاظ على حياته ولكي لا يتعرض الملك الأصلي للخطر كان يعين بدله ملكاً بديلاً ليأخذ معه كل الشرور التي يتعرض لها الملك الأصلي خلال فترة حكمه. فيتوج الملك البديل ويحكم البلاد خلال فترة الخطر التي تمر بها البلاد. وكانت لفترة المحددة لتعيين الملك البديل مائة يوم يمنح خلالها الملك البديل كل صلاحيات الملك الأصلي وواجباته لكي يواجه الأخطار المتوقعة لشخص الملك الأصلي ثم ينحى البديل عن الحكم عند زوال فترة الخطر. في حين كان الملك الأصلي يرابط مع أفراد أسرته في قصر خاص يقوم ببعض الشعائر الدينية وقد يقتل الملك البديل في أثناء مرحلة الخطر أو بعد انتهاء الفترة المتفق عليها. وكانت هذه الطريقة قد مورست منذ عصر فجر السلالات.
وفي العصر البابلي القديم (أوائل الألف الثاني ق.م) اختار الملك (إيرا - إيمتي) ملك مدينة إيسن البستاني (انليل - باني) ليكون ملكاً بديلاً عنه على عرش إيسن ووضع التاج على رأسه. ولكن الملك الأصلي (إيرا - إيمتي) مات في أثناء تناوله حساء فآل الحكم إلى (انليل - باني) الملك البديل ولا نعرف ما إذا كانت هناك مؤامرة على حياة الملك الأصلي الذي مات مسموماً. وتسلم الثاني ز��ام الحكم في الفترة (1864 – 1841 ق.م) وقد أظهر بعد تسلمه العرش مقدرة كبيرة في إدارة دفة حكم البلاد وظل هذا الطقس قيد الاستعمال حتى عصور متأخرة من التاريخ الآشوري.
فتخبرنا النصوص الآشورية في نهاية حكم أسر حدون (669 ق.م) حول تعيين آشور بانيبال ولياً للعهد في آشور حيث تم اختيار ملك بديل عن الملك الأصلي وعندما زال الخطر عن البلاد ذبح ودفن الملك البديل وسط احتفال مهيب. وهكذا وحتى لا يقع الملك الأصلي ضحية يقدم الملك البديل ليقع عليه الخطر لإنقاذ البلاد وشعبها من الخطر المتوقع. ولما كان الخطر الذي يهدد سلامة الملك وحياته ما هو إلا تهديد لسلامة البلاد وأمنها فيستعاض عن حضوره ��ي بعض المناسبات كعمليات السحر الخاصة بالجيش بإرسال ردائه أو أحد أتباعه لكي لا يتعرض هو نفسه لأي خطر. وهذا إن دل على شيء فإنما يدل على اعتزاز الشعب بقادته المتميزين.
