@kimberlynunez03@besavageee That is unfortunately true. Student athletes need to be trained more academically just as they are athletically. If they have more assistance academically, they may be less prone to academic dishonesty.
@besavageee#ucr150
Although it is commonly assumed that intercollegiate athletes are encouraged to academically succeed, research suggests otherwise. Based on that research, involvement in these sports are counterproductive for Black male athletes’ educational interests.
@besavageee#ucr150
@VanBui23@besavageee Definitely true. They only care about the revenue that the students athletes bring to the schools. Intercollegiate athletes need to be fairly compensated. @besavageee#ucr150
Colleges and universities are paying an increasingly steep price to keep athletic departments afloat when academics actually brings in the most revenue to colleges and universities.
@besavageee#ucr150
@DianaRuedas@besavageee You are so right! The NCAA has continuously shown that they care very little about their intercollegiate athletes. Students shouldn’t be harshly punished for wanting to change institutions whether it’s an academic, athletic, or any other issue.
@besavageee#ucr150
I find it very unsettling that the NCAA fails to help their students. They don’t fairly compensate them. They don’t care about their health. Furthermore, students are being harshly punished when wanting to transfer to another institution.
@besavageee#ucr150
@nina_kobayashi_ @besavageee Yes this is so important! Student athletes don’t deserve to suffer for the rest of their lives in return for college enrollment. They at least deserve to be protected by a more specific policy!
@besavageee#ucr150
If all universities complied with Title IX, several aspects of intercollegiate athletics would benefit from this such as but not limited to: financial aid, supplies, publicity, and housing.
@besavageee#ucr150
@e_cee007@besavageee Yes! Title IX is extremely useful for all students as it treats them all on the same level. It’s even more great that the protection includes sexual harassment.
@besavageee#educ150
The pressure that Title IX places on budgets provides a distraction. It’s interesting that this law is supposed to provide the resources so everyone is given equal opportunities yet they state that reforms cannot be done because it would be too costly.
@besavageee#educ150
@joceg002@besavageee Yess definitely true! Colleges seem to scout young people from low income areas where their options seem limited. They take advantage of that fact. @besavageee#educ150
One-year renewable contracts are a major problem! They are not fair to young student athletes because they can very easily lose their financial support.
@besavageee#educ150
@MadisonGhoreis1@besavageee Isn’t it crazy how student athletes are prohibited from being properly compensated? They should at least be given the opportunity to be sponsored or be able to accept donations. #ucr150@besavageee
High school athletes are encouraged to receive athletic scholarships. However, those students aren’t told about the manipulative strategies set up by the NCAA to encourage young athletes to surrender their financial rights in exchange for college.
@besavageee#ucr150
@sfern028 @besavageee What an interesting point! I definitely agree with you. Since universities fail to fairly compensate student athletes, student athletes should be give the option and should be allowed to get that elsewhere.
Taking EDUC50 previously, I have already been exposed to the exploitation of student athletes. It was great to read in Chapter 1 about the associations and projects that are being organized in order to advocate for these students. @besavageee#ucr150
There are many issues that come out of being a student athlete, like mental health and learning to balance your schedule, but at what cost when majority of students never get the chance to play professionally! https://t.co/6SveYbsQ9f @val_orue#ucr50
@Kierste88255599 @val_orue it is definitely an invasion of privacy. even if there was a moral way to do this, it would cause severe issues within the athletic community. @val_orue#ucr50
While there is plenty of discrimination within the athletes, I think it’s important to note the amount of women actually in a coaching position.
