JUST IN: AST SpaceMobile $ASTS has secured a 30-year telecommunications concession in Chile, advancing plans to deliver satellite connectivity directly to ordinary smartphones across the country.

Chile's telecommunications authorities have authorized AST SpaceMobile's local subsidiary to operate a non-geostationary satellite mobile service with nationwide coverage.

The authorization covers S-band frequencies, including 20 MHz for uplink communications and 30 MHz for downlink.

The development follows AST's recent regulatory progress in Brazil, expanding its access to spectrum across Latin America.

Spectrum rights are critical to delivering satellite broadband because they determine which frequencies operators can legally use to connect spacecraft with mobile devices.

The Chilean authorization was issued October 15 and published in the country's official register November 3.

Commercial service has not yet been launched under the concession.
