The same question keeps coming up: “Why is NOBO not participating in the strike?” Let us explain it clearly, once and for all. Why were we removed from UFBU? We did not leave UFBU. We were removed. Our NOBO GS and President consistently raised the issue of Five-Day Banking and other genuine issues in UFBU meetings. When these concerns were not taken seriously, we escalated them directly with DFS and the Ministry through BMS, in the larger interest of the entire banking industry. UFBU objected to this, and subsequently we were removed. This can be verified from UFBU's own circular. What happened after 27th January 2026? After the 27th January strike, IBA agreed to recommend Five-Day Banking to the Government, which was welcomed by everyone, including NOBO. However, months passed without any visible progress. NOBO and NOBW therefore raised the issue through BMS. The BMS CEC at Ranchi in July 2026 decided to launch an agitation programme. BMS announced 17th August 2026 as Demands Day, with dharnas and memoranda across the country. Interestingly, UFBU announced demonstrations on 12th August, immediately after BMS declared its programme. On PLI – UFBU's own promise UFBU had publicly stated that if PLI was credited, it would immediately call a flash strike. PLI was credited—first in Punjab & Sind Bank and subsequently in other banks. The same day, important developments took place:

✅ PLI for Scale IV–VIII (FY 2025-26) kept in abeyance, to be decided in the 13th Bipartite Settlement, with assurance of no discrimination.
✅ Ex-gratia review for pensioners – accepted
✅ Medical insurance premium to be paid by banks – accepted
⏳ Five-Day Banking – study underway
⏳ Pension updation – under consideration
⏳ Transfer Policy – positive assurance

These developments are reflected in the PIB release of 7th September and have also been reported by PTI, Economic Times, Zee Business and others.

We never opposed incentives. We opposed a system where one section of employees was excluded from PLI despite the Bank's performance being the result of the collective efforts of the entire workforce.

Our demand is PLI for everyone without discrimination.

“Abeyance” means on hold, not cancelled. The issue will now be discussed during the Bipartite Settlement rather than being decided through a unilateral circular. This puts the matter on the negotiating table.

On 5Day Banking

There is no confusion about our position. It remains our biggest pending demand.

We raised it in writing and directly before the Finance Minister on 7th September, following which a study is now underway.

We will continue to pursue it until it is implemented.

Our dialogue with the Ministry is ongoing. If dialogue does not bring results, we will decide the next course of agitation accordingly.

So far, three demands have been accepted and are on Government record, while three more are under consideration.

Today, Shri Girish Chandra Arya Ji, All India Secretary, BMS, met Hon’ble Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman Ji and raised the important concerns of the banking sector.

A significant outcome: the DFS has kept the matter in abeyance till the next settlement, providing much-needed relief and time for further discussions.

This is a great achievement of BMS and its committed leadership. 💪
