To use my life as a tool to inspire, mentor and connect young girls to be safe, healthy and empowered together making positive change in our communities
Her story is not just about HIV, it is about gathering courage in the face of stigma. Miss Barbara Kemigisa shares her experience as a victim
Listen, Learn, and Let her voice change the way we see and treat others. #GenZAgainstHIV
@womenlifthealth@AmieBatson Rural women need to be engaged and given platform. We all are women regardless of our social status. Unfortunately the traditional and uneducated women is left to believe she has been taught well and her values stand even when they hurt or are dehumanizing her.
Thank U 4 this
@Winnie_Byanyima@UNFPA@UNFPA_ESARO@UNFPA_WCARO@UNAIDS Because most women are still held captive by culture/ traditional norms and lack of education. It is like living in rural settings is a curse that empowerment comes as being spoilt, not natured and more .
But we are trying to change that and thanks to strong voices like you
@Winnie_Byanyima@UNAIDS@SteglingC@AchrekarAngeli@martineau_tim@KarusaKiragu@EmmaPFowlds I strongly feel we need to stop categorizing adolescents and young people to their situations/diseases. They feel targeted and end up never showing up like they should.
I am happy to see them together for common goals each sharing their stories with no limit on who they can be
When young people in Hoima were asked if they could disclose their HIV status like Philly Lutaaya did, they said it was difficult without safe spaces to run to in case they faced stigma and discrimination.
Bunyoro region needs safe spaces. @MinofHealthUG@Winnie_Byanyima
@womenlifthealth Well-done ladies.
We need more of you and your mentorship will surely make more women and girls tap the passion to lead and be change agents in the communities they live in.
We appreciate your wisdom and support
@Winnie_Byanyima@USAmbGHSD@PEPFAR@CFR_org@StateDept@UNAIDS_NewYork@UNAIDS Indeed thank you for the reminder.
Unfortunately in Hoima, young people are failing to take up leadership roles as they fear discrimination if they opened up on their HIV status without safe spaces to back them up or give them psycho social support.
Bunyoro needs safe spaces
@BarackObama I am a 2018 Mandela Washington Fellow creating a safe community for young people infected, affected and at risk of HIV and AIDS to be safe, healthy and empowered to be change agents in Hoima city, Uganda.
Thank you for your irreplaceable leadership and vision.
In Tonya and Rwentale subcounties on the shores of Lake Albert, people bathe, drink and share the water with animals.
People also use the water as toilets.
But who cares?
This is a file for a client who has not been going to hospital for her ARVs refill for over a year. Everything is filled out as though she has faithfully been attending in person.
People living with HIV in rural communities positives also deserve better.
@Winnie_Byanyima All these could come but the systems are still crumbling for everyone. People in rural areas continue to default medicine and keep away from hospitals because of poor service delivery and rude health workers. If that is failing how about for our dear KPs
These people's lives are at risk because Tonya HCIII is in poor conditions and lacks space to give quality health care services. Expecting mothers have to climb the escapement to Buseruka HCIII for services. We need urgent attention. Open the new facility asap
