@petersavodnik It is because California banned the UC schools from using the SAT as part of the admissions process. This resulted in DEI-based admissions policies where a lot of unqualified students were admitted.

@crichouesly@nxthompson Go to Orange County and see if you encounter parks and sidewalks filled with drug-addled zombies. You wonโt. LA could be the greatest place that ever existed and all it would take is different policy choices. Other cities in the greater LA area prove this.
@Helis40k@atlanticesque A huge % of the black middle class work for the government in some capacity. The wealthiest black county in the country is just outside of DC.
@AndriiAndrii@pmarca@washingtonpost Doesnโt address the Panama Canal. Henry Ford did not invent the car, but he revolutionized manufacturing with the moving assembly line (1913) and that is what led to the automobile age.
@GuSuyu31888@peppercoyote The U.S. spends over $100B a year on food stamps each year. Poor people are also eligible for free healthcare (Medicaid), heavily discounted housing (Section 8), free university tuition, and more. The U.S. spends far more on social spending than China.
The U.S. is so huge and diverse that the average of any state is meaningless. Many parts of the U.S. have amongst the highest life expectancy rate in the world. The median college debt is ~$20-24K and the mean salary for a college graduate is $105K versus โฌ29,490 in EU. The debt is meaningless for the average person.

@Casteri67@VersoEuropa The US is enormous and unequal but a great place to live. California has a Mediterranean climate as well except you can make a lot more money. You think people waking up in San Diego, Orange County, Santa Barbara etc. are waking up wishing they could live in Iceland or the UK?
@MeridianMindset@TheMindScourge@sharghzadeh You can get Australian coffee in the U.S. and third wave coffee originated in the U.S. It really is fantastic.

@Molson_Hart Reminds me of the Tokyo Toilet Project where foundation paid for the construction of public restrooms designed by high-end architects on the condition the maintenance of them was controlled privately to avoid them falling into disrepair.
