@kmanningpsy220 @psyc220 #CD7 @psyc220 I completely agree. Children learn appropriate behavior by observing what those around them do. Even if the parent doesn't think the child understands, children pick up on things and learn to imitate that behavior, and begin to believe in those biases.
@MeganHutcheson7 @psyc220 #CD7 @psyc220 A goal of mine is also to be a parent one day. I hope to teach my children to be anti-racist and to be welcoming and kind to all people as a way to fight against oppression.
#CD7 @psyc220 On the other hand, I will also have the amazing opportunity to change the narrative and teach children from a young age to be anti-racist and to be welcoming, kind, and loving. By doing this, it is my hope to see change in the coming generations. 3/3
#CD7 @psyc220 My primary career goal is to be an elementary school guidance counselor where I'll get to help kids through rough times and play a role in their growth and maturing. As someone who will work in a school, I will hold a lot of unintentional power when it comes 1/3
#CD7 @psyc220 to the socialization process. One of the biggest ways I can see this role reinforcing systems of oppression is through the training and teaching that I would receive. If I was required to do something because of my job, I would be reinforcing that system. 2/3
@SlimShadyJmu @psyc220 #CD6 @psyc220 It is so interesting that you brought this point up because I actually discussed something very similar in my tweet. Society views being gay as "weak" and then have many stereotypes of what they think a gay man should be.
@ChloeSwan17 @psyc220 @psyc220 #CD6 I completely agree, and this is an excellent point. I think also within certain groups, getting the help needed is seen as more taboo which can only add to the weight of that mental illness.
@psyc220 #CD6 On the other hand, gay men have many expectations put on them such as an expectation to dress, talk, and act a certain way and be interested in certain things. This pressure doesn't seem as prevalent in society among gay women.
@psyc220 #CD6 I want to discuss the intersectionality of gender and being part of the LGBTQ+ community. Many people treat being gay differently based on gender. A gay woman is fetishized by society whereas a gay man is not. 1/2
@zoem444 @psyc220 #220Ethics @psyc220 This is a great example of the ethic of autonomy. Supporting each person and their recovery is a really good example of avoiding harm.
#220Ethics @psyc220 This tweet is an example of the ethic of autonomy as it argues to protect the fairness for young people to a voice and spot at the table in these discussions about climate change and our environment.
Young people have more at stake in the fight against climate change than anyone else. I had a chance to talk with some young people who are helping lead the fight, and could not be more impressed by their courage, creativity, and persistence. They give me hope.
@samipsych @psyc220 #CD5b @psyc220 I like how you described this kind of praise as "backhanded." I think that's a great way to describe it. This kind of "inspiration" really just makes those who are able-bodied feel better about themselves rather than actually inspiring and uplifting others.
@kaylashepard_ @psyc220 #CD5a @psyc220 I chose a very similar image of "inspiration porn" for one of my prompts. It's so frustrating that images like this exist because they insinuate that all disabilities are the same and all people with disabilities can do the same things which isn't true.
@milanohrjmu @psyc220 #CD5a @psyc220 When I've been to some of my friend's apartments, I've noticed the same thing! There are very few apartment complexes that are accessible to those with disabilities especially those requiring a wheelchair.
@terrykiiim @psyc220 #CD5b @psyc220 I hate this "inspiration porn" because it insinuates that the girl in the wheelchair isn't deserving of having a date to prom, so the guy is doing some amazing "favor" for the girl by going with her. All of this is really just insulting and offensive.
#CD5b @psyc220 This type of "inspiration porn" tries to make it seem like all disabilities are equal which just isn't true. Every person's disability is different, and therefore, each person has different levels of ability.
#CD5b @psyc220 This is an example of inspiration porn because it is trying to be inspiring to others by putting them down for having a disability and insinuating that having a disability isn't a valid reason to not be able to do something.
#CD5a @psyc220 There are many buildings on campus that have side/back entrances that are accessible by ramps, but the primary and most direct way to enter the building requires using stairs. People in wheelchairs have to go out of their way to enter the building. Example: ISAT
#CD4 @psyc220 Gender/gender roles play a role in every person's life whether directly or indirectly regardless of one's gender identity/expression. While typically female gender roles have negative conotations, male gender roles are equally as confining.
