MMT and YCC are like fatal steroids that can juice an economy for a number of years until the chickens finally come home to roost.
The problem is once you start these things, it becomes incredibly difficult to find an off ramp. But that doesn’t mean they can’t produce one hell of an economic bubble along the way.
For example, imagine the UK announces a massive New Deal style public works program and the Chancellor of the Exchequer runs deficits in the 8-10% of GDP range, all while the Bank of England runs YCC to make it all possible.
Nominal GDP would probably explode upwards, if for no other reason than the fact that unemployment would fall, while wages and capex spending would surge.
The crisis would probably only come 5-10 years later, and the first signs would probably show up in the labor market.
Let’s assume the Green New Deal entails building millions of new homes, renovating every existing house to be more energy efficient, constructing enough renewable power stations to get to net zero, and rebuilding the entire country’s infrastructure to be less car dependent.
The government can instantly print £10 trillion to pay for it all, but it can’t instantly print all the construction workers, engineers, electricians, plumbers, architects, factors, machines, steel, lumber, or existing energy needed to make it all happen.
The moment the government spending grows faster than the economy’s ability to absorb all that new money via production increases, all that infinite money begins chasing after the same finite pool of goods and services.
And then you will inevitably get the inflation that MMT critics always talk about.
The funny thing is the MMTers believe they have an answer to this objection. “Just raise taxes to pull all that excess money out of the economy to lower inflation.”
These people either have no idea how politics works in reality, or they’re closet authoritarians who expect to pull off a Chavez-style takeover of the country once they create a large enough constituency who are loyal to the MMTers themselves by virtue of the fact that their livelihoods are now depending on all these new “green jobs programs.”
I cannot imagine MMT and Parliamentary democracy coexisting for long.
I mean, just imagine a Chancellor literally telling Parliament that they need to immediately raise taxes by £100 billion for the sole purpose of destroying private-sector purchasing power in order to deal with an inflation the state itself manufactured in the first place.
And then imagine Parliament going along with it.
Something will break. Either the Pound itself would in the face of reckless monetary policy, or MMT will in the face of political reality and the fact that it’s now creating the very austerity it promised to abolish, or the Parliamentary system itself will as Socialist demagogues use the various machinery of state that MMT finances in order to establish a Left-wing authoritarian dictatorship.
The end result would be economic Japanification or a sort of Chavez with English characteristics.
Democrats only have any sort of sentimental attachment to America when they feel like they have total ideological control over it because they’re Liberals, and Liberals ultimately have no nation of their own.
Trump didn’t drain the soul out of anything. Democrats just adopted an ideology that dissolves the nation and leaves its own adherents increasingly atomized and mentally ill.
Rest in peace, Master Kavar, the Jedi Order thanks you.
Tom Kane's voiced so many roles, it's a shame to hear of his passing - he'll be missed.

@PandasAndVidya It's similar to how I feel about my country. I know Brazil is not as bad as Congo, but whenever people come up with brilliant ideas on how to turn Brazil into an economic powerhouse, I quietly remind myself that Brazil is full of Brazilians.
Of course he’d say that cause he’ll never understand no matter how many fancy clothes he wears or how much money his champagne socialist ass spends.
I’m the epitome of a lonely gamer whose never been in a relationship and prolly never will at this point yet I get it cause, while God didn’t bless me with children, I have a brother and cousin to take care of and they’re the only two reasons why I’m still alive.
“God took my dad but He left you here to take care of me” her last week.
By his own definition then gamers shouldn’t care about 90% of the shit he whines about on stream from the comfort of his mansion because they’ll never experience that either.
His nepo baby ass will never know what it’s like to keep going for the sake of seeing others smile, and that’s just sad.
Do you have ANY idea what these guys had to put themselves through to look like this? But no, being asked to suck your gut in for a few seconds was clearly far worse.
Because in the post social media world, the second someone gets turned into a mural, they become a martyr and their death is used as ammunition to force systemic change.
George Floyd stuffed a handful of fake percs in his mouth ON VIDEO and sublingually absorbed a lethal dose of fentanyl. There is certainly an argument to be made that the cops basically killed him via negligence by not administering narcan, but that's beside the point.
However, the iconography of this event took on a memetic life of its own, and what started as murals and slogans very quickly progressed into lighting half the country on fire and massive systemic changes.
Just looking locally, the post-BLM police reforms in DC resulted in the city's homicide rate nearly doubling over the span of 3 years. The cops in a city of 700,000 people shot a grand total of two people, total, in 2023. There were 274 murders that year.
Now, take a case like Iryna Zarutska. This was a young white woman murdered randomly, in cold blood, in public, purely on behalf of her race, by a schizophrenic violent felon who had been let out of jail under democratic policies 14 goddamn times.
Never mind the fact that if the races were swapped, it would have been the only news story on TV for six straight months, just think about the potential ramifications to policy and systems that have been carefully crafted if there was a similar memetic ground swell of resistance? This is a case that's 10x as visually iconic and 1000x as utterly indefensible.
That's why these people fucking flip out when someone puts up a mural of her: they're not so much concerned with hiding the event as they are with killing the meme.
