don't worry guys, for every 15 minutes I spend talking nonsense on twitter I'm putting in 6+ hours on the game. I also have a full-time job, an off-grid house I'm renovating, and a dog

@yano_gamedev Here she is 😝 https://t.co/AjTf1Ig9NC

@ABoringLadder Thank you! https://t.co/lNc5Jf9Uc5

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@imcrimsonstrife For sure, I'm not proposing any kind of policy. I'm just helping people to understand that if they build a game using an engine was made with AI, then their game will contain AI generated code

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

Out of interest Tim, are AI tools being used to develop UE now? My point last year was that any game built with modern engines would need to declare AI code. It was intended to demonstrate how extreme the Steam disclosure rules were. But you said "not true" to AI in Unreal

[Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic]

@BenjiGameDev Not true. I just hate to see Valve confiscate ever more opportunity from small developers by facilitating new categories cancel campaigns and review bombing. Steam used to just facilitate downloads. Then they foreclosed on payments, then price competition, then crypto, now AI.

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@Tommy_Gun1007 @TerminatusX I'd recommend you read it again. It's a bit difficult to parse, I guess because of the translation from Japanese

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

I'd be astonished if Miyamoto / Nintendo get cancelled for using AI. Mario and Zelda are bulletproof. When a boycott becomes too inconvenient, the behaviour will pivot to "begrudgingly participating in society" like from the meme

[Grummz @Grummz]

Miyamoto is cancelled.

He just came out in favor of AI in game dev…

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@TimSweeneyEpic Thank you for confirming!

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@ricky__59 @tim_trollgasm heh I'm only joking, but thank you! 🫶

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@Medfa1222 @TimSweeneyEpic what point do you think I'm making?

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

This heavily implies that Epic are now using AI coding tools for the latest updates to Unreal Engine

Therefore, according to Steam guidelines, any game built with Unreal Engine must declare the use of GenAI

[Tim Sweeney @TimSweeneyEpic]

@mattworkman Agreed. The AI tag is relevant to art exhibits for authorship disclosure, and to digital content licensing marketplaces where buyers need to understand the rights situation. It makes no sense for game stores, where AI will be involved in nearly all future production.

I'm actually considering releasing this dungeon - The House of Brass - as a standalone prequel to Islands of the Jinn. It would be cheap, and I'd be able to release it in the next few months instead of another 1-year-ish of fairly hard crunch to complete the entire game

A genuine concern is the state of indie games on Steam and the deluge of AI content to which this most recent nextfest was a canary in the coalmine. By the end of 2027 I think the landscape is going to be insane, and I'd rather not enter Azaran into that world without a solid footing / established audience

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@Tristafeyr ❤️ Thank you! Luckily gamedev is what I do to relax from all the actual work 😆

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

@TerminatusX Yes, he's worried about the pre-AI world where the *process* produces satisfaction, and that people mistake that satisfaction of "I made something" with the satisfaction of "I made something good".

He's saying that AI is a solution to that worry

[Benji @BenjiGameDev]

Ah thank you! This actually reads more pro-AI to me than the other snippets. Specifically:

"people can become so satisfied with the work itself that they start mistaking that satisfaction for having created something good... the more AI takes care of (the work), the more opportunities we have to think seriously about what it really means to create something"

To me this reads as an argument against the creative process and more in favour of the creative vision. And that a frictionless way of fulfilling your vision - like AI - might actually provide more clarity on whether the vision was good or not. It's a pretty radical stance to be honest!
