Responding to launch of the Global Clean Power Alliance by @Keir_Starmer at #G20@cat_pettengell said:
"Political leadership is urgent to make real last year’s COP28 agreements to globally transition away from fossil fuels, and triple renewables and double efficiency by 2030...
While talks are stalled, it's still heartening to see the Clean Energy Transition Partnership referenced in the NCQG draft text here. and an excellent thread as usual from Natalie at IISD
The new NCQG text #COP29 has many good elements, from a fossil fuel phase out perspective.
First, in several places in the text, phasing out fossil fuel subsidies is mentioned:
Colombia is the biggest fossil fuel producer in the 🌎 with a roadmap to reduce reliance on the sector.
At #COP29, it needs $10bn, technical assistance & access to cleantech from the int’l community.

Colombia is one taking a pragmatic approaching in moving away from fossil fuel production - and using a $40bn investment plan to leverage international finance - one to watch...Why the international community should back Colombia's post-fossil fuel plan
#Colombia is seen as a leader on the transition away from fossil fuels.
With a plan for $40bn in transition investment + #JustTransition projects, IISD's Vance Culbert explains why 🇨🇴's approach should inspire other countries with national oil companies at #COP29.

nkiruka madueke of Nigeria's national climate calls discussed #boga support country's energy transition & need for more finance for energy and economy wide transition @e3g
An extremely valuable contribution by the @IEA to monitoring the global progress on the COP28 #EnergyTransition goals.
One big gap this report nevertheless has is lack of clarity on how to deliver and measure the "transition away from #fossilfuels (TAFFF)". 1/3
Azerbaijan produced half the world's oil at the start of the 20th century - now with oil production declining and demand for its gas falling #COP29 offers an opportunity to take advantage of opportunities of energy transition while it still can.
As #COP29 approaches, E3G examines Azerbaijan’s role as this year’s COP Presidency, its transition away from fossil fuels, and its relationship with the EU, its major energy partner. (1/4) Read the full briefing here https://t.co/rYfKs7AHnF👇
OUT TODAY: Rate my transition!
The IEA evaluates the "policy implementation gap" compared to COP28 goals..
The 3 things i found interesting:
🟡Renewables is actually one of the smaller gaps (awesome!)
🔴 Efficiency is WAAAYYYYY off track
🔴 Methane reduction also awol
The UK has committed to cleaning up its aid and stopping investments in new fossil fuel projects overseas.
But a government-backed company called Globeleq has been building gas power plants across Africa.
So what's going on with Globeleq?

Europe has likely reached peak consumption of liquefied natural gas yet continues building import terminals and related infrastructure, raising the risk of stranded assets https://t.co/HDq4tEZbEB via @markets
Impressive research from @JordanADilworth @EunjungLee_LDN shows UK protects more annual GHG emissions than any other country by ISDS in investment treaties. Also highlights ISDS could threaten transition in Colombia, Egypt and Nigeria. Lots of excellent details in report
📊E3G reveals that investment treaties with ISDS provisions are misaligned with global climate efforts, with up to 2 Gt of GHG emissions protected by ISDS.
Wealthy countries must tackle these treaties if they are serious about their climate commitments.

Gas flaring in UN climate host Azerbaijan reached record high in 2023 +70% in the past six years. The activity in Azerbaijan had “gone largely unnoticed” because the country “hasn’t bothered to report its emissions in six years” @patrickgaley https://t.co/ipoQBx719L
#COP29 host Azerbaijan is failing to tackle its flaring of methane, the most potent greenhouse gas
According to @Global_Witness analysis of satellite data, flaring emissions have risen 10% since Baku last submitted emissions data to the UN

In remarks today @antonioguterres, called attention to the surge in new oil & gas licences, urging countries to "phase-out #FossilFuels – fast & fairly."
New IISD analysis, out yesterday, finds the 🇺🇸, 🇨🇦, 🇦🇺, 🇳🇴, & 🇬🇧 issued two thirds of 🌎 oil & gas licences since 2020.
excellent new research from @IISD_Energy in the @guardian on "the other petrostates" - wealthy countries with low economic dependence on oil and gas who are issuing record numbers of new licenses. Looking forward to watching this work develop...
@theCCCuk 4th report is clear that
- New oil and gas licensing signals a maintained reliance on fossil fuel
UK oil and gas policy should be aligned to Global Stocktake call to transition away from fossil fuels
- Faster we get off fossil fuels more secure we become
The @Telegraph published an article last week claiming Ed Miliband had "ordered an immediate ban on new drilling in the North Sea"
After @energygovuk, @NSTAuthority, and even O&G trade body @OEUK_ highlighted major errors, it has been substantially changed
What happened? 🧵
