The renewal of the UN Special Rapporteur’s mandate is an important step toward continued international scrutiny. Eritrean victims and their families deserve truth, accountability, and justice. The international community must keep pressing for the release of all arbitrarily detained prisoners and respect for fundamental human rights in Eritrea.

#Update: Ethiopia and Somaliland Move Toward Deeper Maritime and Trade Cooperation.
Ethiopia and Somaliland are likely to deepen economic and logistical cooperation around Berbera Port in the coming years, according to Ethiopian Business Review report, citing a new analysis by the Emirates Policy Center.
The report says Ethiopia’s long-running effort to diversify sea access beyond Djibouti and Somaliland’s push to strengthen its role as a regional trade hub are driving a more pragmatic relationship centered on commerce, logistics, infrastructure and mutual cooperation.
While the EPC identifies gradual cooperation in trade, transport corridors and port services as the most likely scenarios, it says deeper arrangements remain constrained by Somaliland’s lack of international recognition, Somalia’s opposition to bilateral deals with Hargeisa and the diplomatic framework established by the Ankara Declaration between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Getachew Reda Joins Zoom Meeting with Newly Formed Eritrean Opposition Group.
Getachew Reda, Ethiopia’s Advisor on East African Affairs and a prominent political figure, actively participated in a high-profile Zoom meeting with leaders and members of the newly formed Eritrean opposition group. His engagement in the virtual gathering has drawn significant attention, highlighting potential cross-border dialogues on regional stability and political change in the Horn of Africa. Getachew Reda’s involvement signals a deepening interest from Ethiopian stakeholders in supporting or engaging with emerging Eritrean voices advocating for reform, especially amid ongoing tensions between the two nations.
During the Zoom session, Getachew Reda engaged directly with representatives of the Eritrean Youth Movement for Unity and Justice (EY MUJ), offering insights and exchanging views on the path forward for Eritrea’s future. As a key advisor with extensive experience in East African diplomacy, his participation lent credibility and visibility to the nascent movement, which seeks to mobilize young Eritreans around principles of justice, inclusive representation, and national renewal. Getachew Reda’s presence underscored the movement’s ambition to foster unity and challenge long-standing political stagnation, positioning the group as a fresh alternative for Eritrean youth disillusioned with the current system.
The Eritrean Youth Movement for Unity and Justice now stands poised to emerge as a bold new opposition force, with Getachew Reda’s Zoom meeting participation serving as an early catalyst for greater regional awareness and potential collaboration. This engagement not only amplifies the movement’s message but also reflects shifting dynamics where Ethiopian figures are increasingly interacting with Eritrean opposition elements. As the group gains momentum, Getachew Reda’s role may prove instrumental in bridging conversations that could influence broader Horn of Africa politics, youth empowerment, and prospects for lasting peace and democratic progress.

"Seeing our fellow citizens struggle to get one full meal a day in a city where food is often left over and thrown away is a shared pain and a great responsibility we must all shoulder."
This powerful sentiment, expressed by Addis Ababa Mayor Adanech Abiebie during the inauguration of the city's 30th residents' feeding center in Yerer, highlights a strong commitment to establishing social justice within the capital.

... the Special Rapporteur’s efforts to report on the human rights situation in #Eritrea continues to be needed. As such, the UK supports the draft resolution on the human rights situation in Eritrea and its outcome to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur... and the adoption of this resolution by consensus.
If a vote is called, we will vote YES and encourage others to do the same.
