It is affecting Canada, and badly.
You're right, Canada has ten times Britain's landmass and one third fewer people per square kilometre. But the community sponsorship scheme is still breaking it. Net migration to Canada hit 1.2 million in 2023. Housing costs have risen faster than almost anywhere in the developed world. The vacancy rate for rentals in Toronto and Vancouver is under one percent. The Liberal government that championed the model was destroyed at the polls earlier this year, replaced by a Conservative administration that has already announced significant cuts to immigration targets, describing the previous levels as unsustainable.

Canada tried the model with vastly more space, vastly more land available for housing and vastly more natural resources per head than Britain possesses. It still produced a housing crisis, an infrastructure crisis and a political backlash severe enough to end the government that built it.

Shabana Mahmood is not importing the Canadian model. She is importing the Canadian model's consequences into a country already running at infrastructure capacity, with a housing waiting list measured in years, GP surgeries that cannot cope, schools already stretched and a welfare state carrying obligations it was never designed to absorb at this scale. Manning admitted as much. The trade-off was understood. The costs were always going to be long term. The difference is that Britain has far less room to absorb them than Canada did, and Canada still couldn't absorb them.
