This happened in June 2017. After my wife passed, I had my little dogs with me and my half brother would stay from time to time. I lived in a duplex across the street from a pretty cool couple, Joe and Donna. Joe was the most awesome bass player I had ever seen and his wife, Donna, was a drummer. Really nice people and I considered them good friends.
Anyway, Joe had health problems galore. As he got older, he developed really severe breathing problems. He would frequently get hospitalized and I always kept an eye out on their house when they were not there.
One time, Joe is in the hospital and his wife, Donna, calls me up. She asked me to keep an eye out on their place because it had been broken into the day before and a big, huge milk can of silver change had been stolen. Imagine a milk can from the early 1900's and that is what they had full of silver. It probably had $1000 or more just in silver coins and was heavy as hell.
Anyway, as I am talking to Donna, I tell her, "Well, there is a black Silverado in your driveway right now". She asked me to go check it out, as no one should be there. So, my little dogs had to peepee anyway, and I figured I would take them out, check on Joe and Donna's house, and get them back in. It wouldn't take long. I let the dogs out and started to walk across the street and noticed what appeared to be a bunch of clothes thrown onto the ground right off their front porch. It was a body of a young man. My half-brother, Bo, was outside watching the dogs. I yelled at him, "Hey, there's a fcking body over here". He said, "Bullshit, you're kidding". I told him to come over and check it out. I then called the police and was waiting on them to get there.
In the meantime, the neighborhood kid's started gathering around to see the body. I tried to run them off but all I could really do was keep them from touching the body. They didn't really listen to me. Finally, the police got there as well as the coroner.
We did not know this at the time but, a local small car lot had reported one of their workers had taken a black Silverado to lunch and had not returned...hence the black Silverado in Joe and Donna's driveway.
What had happened was, the guy was the one that broke into the house and stolen the milk can full of change. Once inside, he saw a lot of bass guitar equipment and a drum set that he wanted to steal. He wanted to come back and steal this stuff. He needed a truck to load it up, so he went back to work, took a truck and came back to rob Joe and Donna of their bass guitar equipment and drum set-up.
Now, because they had been broken into, Donna had dead bolted her front door and the dude could not get in easily. He attempted to kick in the front door, but it was a metal door (looked like wood though) and it cause him to fall backwards, off the porch, and land at the perfect angle to immediately break his neck and kill him. He had been laying there dead a good two hours before I noticed him. He was 37 years old, two kids, and lost his life doing bad shit. It just goes to show you, you never know when your number may come up.
