A small town in southern Finland has turned to the world's largest commercial sand battery to fix what many see as the most critical problem facing renewable energy: intermittency.
Standing at 13 meters tall and 15 meters wide, the eye-catching facility uses 2,000 metric tons of crushed soapstone to store clean energy in the form of heat to provide 100 megawatt-hours of thermal energy.

Our #HubbleTopImage features a cosmic concoction!
This NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image of NGC 2467 features a colourful star-forming region. Looking like a cauldron of some exotic cosmic brew 🧙♀️ clouds of gas and dust are sprinkled with bright young stars.
These stars emit fierce ultraviolet radiation that cause the whole scene to glow, while also sculpting the environment and eroding the gas clouds. Studies have shown that most of the radiation comes from the single massive star just above the centre of the image.

Kind, wise, impish, graceful, warm.
The last time I saw him I took the opportunity to tell him he was an inspiration to me.
Rest in Peace Sam.
Hoag’s Object on of the universe’s greatest mysteries...
Most of these rare ring galaxies are created by large collisions, but that doesn't fit Hoag’s Object. So how did it form?
We still don't know...

A proud Marine, a New Yorker by birth, and a leader of men in combat—Second Lieutenant Patrick Joseph Gallagher gave his life for his country on September 27, 1967, during a firefight in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam. He was just 23 years old.
Patrick had entered service through the Marine Corps Reserve and was assigned to Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, 3rd Marine Division. His role: Basic Infantry Officer—a job title that hardly begins to describe the burden, courage, and sacrifice it entailed. On that fateful day, he was engaged in direct combat when he was struck by hostile small arms fire. He never made it home.🕊️
Lt. Gallagher was born October 24, 1943. Today, we remember him not just as a Marine or an officer—but as a son of New York whose service ended far too soon in the jungles of Vietnam. His sacrifice is part of a legacy that should never be forgotten.
