While in #Gaborone for the High-Level Harmonisation Meeting of AU Panel of Facilitators for Eastern #DRC Peace Process & the Independent Joint Secretariat, I paid a courtesy visit to H.E. Phenyo Butale, Honourable Minister of International Relations of the Republic of #Botswana. Honourable Minister Phenyo Butale reiterated readiness to further strengthen the existing cordial relations between the #AU Commission and the Republic of #Botswana. We both look forward to Botswana's leadership in the forthcoming ministerial meeting of the Committee on African Candidatures within the International System.

Very productive was my engagement with Hon. Justice Barnabas Nyamadzabo, Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (#IEC) of the Republic of #Botswana, on the sidelines of the High-Level Harmonisation Meeting of #AU Panel of Facilitators on #eDRC Peace Process & the Independent Joint Secretariat. We shared experiences on electioneering process, and I particularly recalled appreciatively, the peaceful conduct of #Botswana's election in October 2024 under the leadership of Hon. Justice Barnabas. We agreed on shared interests and jointly identified new areas of collaborative engagement between the #AUC & #IEC.

The Committee of Experts of the #AUPSC continues its two-day workshop today, at the Nigerian National Counterterrorism Center in #Abuja 🇳🇬, ahead of the 17th #PSCAnnualRetreat on the Review of its #WorkingMethods (6–7 November 2025).

Today’s Discussions focused on:
1️⃣ Development of the draft #PSC Indicative Annual Programme of Work for 2026;
2️⃣ Preparations for the 17th #PSCAnnualRetreat; and
3️⃣ Consideration and adoption of the Draft Report of the #PSC Capacity Building Programme.

The #AUPSC convened its 1309th virtual meeting today on Women, Peace and Security in Africa, marking 25 years of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (#UNSCR1325).

Chaired by H.E. Amb. Tebelelo Alfred Boang, the session reflected on Africa’s leadership in advancing women’s participation in #peacebuilding #mediation and #conflictprevention.

The Council reviewed achievements, identified gaps, and adopted recommendations to strengthen the Women, Peace and Security Agenda across the continent.

Key outcomes:
1️⃣ Reaffirmed commitment to UNSCR 1325 and AU Agenda 2063
2️⃣ Called for stronger funding & institutional support to the Office of the AU Special Envoy on #WPS
3️⃣ Commended #Namibia for championing the #WPS Agenda
4️⃣ Urged Member States to promote Inclusive and gender-responsive implementation
5️⃣ Underscored the need for enhanced coordination, monitoring and reporting

[African Union Political Affairs Peace and Security @AUC_PAPS]

The 19th Annual Joint Consultative Meeting between the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (#AUPSC) and the United Nations Security Council (#UNSC) was held today, 17 October 2025, at the AU Headquarters.

Members of the two Councils discussed a range of security and conflict-related issues, including: 1) Reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation and advancing lasting peace, security, and stability on the continent, 2) strengthening AU peace support operations, particularly @aussom_, 3) the Sahel and Lake Chad Basin regions as well as maritime security, 4) the situation in the Horn of Africa, particularly the situations in Sudan and South Sudan, and 5) the situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

They also observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Rt. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya.
