Something we don't know very much about is the role bacteria play in bryophyte biology. Here are some rod-shaped bacteria on the surface of a moss leaf stained in lactophenol cotton blue.
New #preprint alert! What are the core symbionts of lichens? TLDR: we analyzed >400 lichen metagenomes from around the world and found that 4 bacterial groups are as frequent in lichens as the alga, one of the two main partners in the symbiosis. 🧵1/11 https://t.co/pxsuvOXqfq
Racomitrium lanuginosum
Grimmiaceae
Bryophyta
Not very common on Victoria Island since it orefers acidic rock... but still occurs!
Featuring many lichens.
A bit of a surprise in the #SloaneHerbarium@NHM_Botany today as I continue with work to inventory the collection. I have never seen a folio like this before. A work of art... but difficult to count the number of specimens. And who is it?
There's been lots of talk on moving #ScienceTwitter to another platform
As scientists, we should make informed decisions & not accept status quo - so what are the options? I checked out open-source non-profit @joinmastodon

Cyrtomnium hymenophylloides
Mniaceae
Bryophyta
Top 5 mosses of the arctic. Bluey-green, never red, and found growing in protected hollows or small overhangs.
Cinclidium latifolium
Mniaceae
Bryophyta
Sooo distinct because of its leaves that curl backwards away from the stem. Found in saturated lakeside communities.

Advance guard for the BBS AGM at Middlesbrough this year visited Botton Head in N Yorkshire to see Mielichhoferia elongata. This rare moss was locally abundant on the more stable areas of steep shale scree. Many tufts, several cm thick, had become loose and rolled down the slope.
#PlantADay Curl Up and Dry. It's not easy being green, especially when you lack and epidermis and desiccate quickly. When moisture is scarce, Riccia squamata rolls into a tube, exposing richly hued purple or brown scales in a bid to prevent water loss. #liverwort#moss
#PlantADay 19. You've heard of algae growing on slow-moving sloths. Now get ready for #moss that grows on lizards, millipedes, and beetles. Fissidens brachypus grows on a single species of freswhater coral in the Amazon River. https://t.co/bc9qRgkreu #bryophytes#mosses
Stop! Let's talk about how peatlands keep the planet breathing.
When our Headway team wrote about the amazing carbon-storage capabilities of this ecosystem, folks had a lot of questions—more than 1,000 actually. https://t.co/R5mLUKC4lF
