Today I’m joining 30+ colleagues in taking an unusual step: calling for a halt to a line of research I was excited about, the long-term effort to build “mirror life”.
We’re sharing our findings in a @ScienceMagazine paper:

It was great to be in Minneapolis for SynCell2023 @buildacell! Massive thanks to @KateAdamala for inviting me and organising.
Here's a pic of a mini-adventure with the amazing @DoraTang5 and @DiMicheleLAB1
I really had a wonderful time at #SynCell2023 and @buildacell Workshop 10. It was great to see many old and new faces! 👏to @KateAdamala and all the students/staff members who made this happen.
Last day of #SynCell2023, we were joined by a special guest, an example of #bioengineering that went horribly right: Goldy the Gopher came to learn how to build synthetic cells.
He also helped us with poster prize ceremony.

Our @BaSyCresearch delegation at #SynCell2023 couldn't miss the chance to take a photo together with Goldy Gopher, the @UMNews mascot!
Congrats to Ana, Marijn and Miyer Fabián, the best poster prize winners 👏

Had some very fun 3 days at #SynCell2023 in Minneapolis! We listened to very original and interesting talks and I really enjoyed presenting my PhD work 🤓
My excitement might or might not be biased by the dessert table 🤩
Check out this article, written by @SynCellEU, about our recent @J_A_C_S papers on controlling gene expression with multiple wavelengths of light 😍
I'm also going to be presenting this work today at SynCell2023 @buildacell!!!
One week left until SynCell2023

We're looking forward to great talks, posters and company.
If you can't travel, you could still participate by viewing talks remotely.

Tiny protein-making factories in cells, called ribosomes, have been made to self-replicate outside cells for 1st time.
A "huge milestone" for building artificial self-replicating cells & understanding life's origin. @KateAdamala told @newscientist.
