Through the 2026 Evidence to Policy Symposium on Advancing Refugee Economic Inclusion in East Africa, IGAD and its partners are bringing together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and refugee-led initiatives to explore solutions that strengthen livelihoods, economic participation, and self-reliance.
The symposium promotes evidence-based approaches to employment, skills development, labour market access, financial inclusion, entrepreneurship, and durable solutions, while amplifying locally led and policy-relevant research from across East Africa.

#IGAD participated in the Second International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) 2026 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, highlighting regional migration priorities and challenges affecting the IGAD region.
During the Forum, IGAD advocated for a route-based implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, with emphasis on migrant protection, addressing root causes of migration, and strengthening regional cooperation.
IGAD also joined @BMZ, @DjiboutiIom and @ilo in a side event promoting the importance of reliable and disaggregated migration data for evidence-based policymaking.
On the sidelines of the Forum, IGAD met with RefugePoint to strengthen cooperation on advancing refugeesโ economic inclusion and self-reliance.
At the close of IMRF 2026, IGAD reaffirmed the importance of regional platforms in advancing shared migration priorities and coordinated action.

Informal women traders & customs officials from Moyale/Moyale (Ethiopia-Kenya Border) are on a learning exchange visit to the Busia One Stop Border Post (OSBP) to learn best practices, share challenges, and design solutions that protect the rights of women traders and strengthen safer cross-border trade.
The visit aims to address operational, regulatory, and coordination challenges of informal women traders at the Moyale OSBP by drawing lessons from the Busia OSBPโs coordination and trade facilitation practices.
With Kenya and Uganda immigration and customs authorities on board, this visit aims at creating a strong platform for dialogue and collaboration.
The learning visit is organized under the Strengthening IGAD Migration Policy Implementation (SIMPI) Intervention. #IGADMigration

๐The 4-day #IGAD โ #GIZ mission under the Strengthening IGAD Migration Policy Implementation (SIMPI) Initiative, successfully concluded along the #Ethiopia - #Kenya cross-border area.
๐คThis mission culminated in signing of joint agreements and official launch of the Moyale Cross-Border Technical Working Groups (TWGs) focused on Health, Education, and Womenโs Trade, in the presence of local and regional leaders.
โ๏ธThe initiative seeks to promote cross-border cooperation by addressing systemic vulnerabilities in public health, improving capacity in education service delivery, and supporting women tradersโ economic empowerment.
These efforts will be managed through the IGAD Cross-Border Facilitation Office in Moyale.

IGAD is conducting a #4days monitoring visit at Ethiopia โ Kenya Cross border, as part of the SIMPI Initiative, designed to strengthen migration policy implementations efforts at the Kenya-Ethiopia Cross Borderlands of Moyale Moyale within the Marsabit Moyale IGAD Cluster.
The monitoring visit aims to;
โ Raise awareness of the Moyale Cross Border Facilitation Unit among IGAD colleagues and management,
โ Engage local authorities in Moyale (Ethiopia and Kenya),
โ Discuss the dynamics and needs of informal women traders, and
โ Interact with local coordination structures, including the Peace Committee, project beneficiaries, the Local Community Steering Committee, and the local migration network.
