"THE HEIDI GAME"
#Jets-#Raiders
November 17, 1968
*Final NBC broadcast moments, followed by a short photo essay and the following evening's NBC News coverage*
At precisely 7:00pm ET, NBC cuts off the dramatic ending of the Raiders-Jets classic AFL aerial duel to show the children's movie "Heidi" to most of the US viewing audience.
Nearly 3/4 of the nation misses Oakland score two touchdowns in the final 42 seconds to win, 43-32.
After the game, Lucy Ewbank — wife of Jets' head coach Weeb Ewbank — had telephoned Weeb after the game, congratulating him on the big win.
She, like most others, had no idea that Oakland had won in the game's final minute.
In yet another gaffe, NBC ran an information crawl at the bottom of the screen about 25 minutes after the game's end, stating that Oakland had prevailed, 43-32.
Evidently, this crawl ran during a very tense, emotional scene in the "Heidi" movie.
"The Heidi Game" fiasco ultimately served as a bellwether that most football fans had accepted the 1966 AFL-NFL merger agreement...as thousands of angry fans flooded NBC with calls, blowing out its switchboard.
The following evening, NBC News's David Brinkley detailed what had occurred.
Truly one of pro football history's most unforgettable days.
