Another Talent Lost — Thanks to India’s Broken Tax and Infrastructure System

My friend’s elder brother, a highly skilled architect working in a top MNC in Pune, has left India and moved to Europe. The reason? Better pay, lower taxes, and a dignified quality of life.

I helped him to file his income tax returns and its a shocker for me when i heard this news. This is someone who paid ₹22 lakhs in income tax in FY24 and a staggering ₹31 lakhs in FY25. Yet, despite being a top taxpayer, he got nothing in return, just more extortion through GST, capital gains tax, dividend tax, and an endless list of compliances.

What pushed him over the edge wasn’t just the taxation nightmare, he is so happy to contribute to his country, but it was the crumbling infrastructure, unreliable healthcare, overpriced yet poor-quality education, and unsafe food. He finally decided that his children deserve better. He chose dignity and opportunity abroad over frustration and chaos at home.

This is how India is bleeding talent and revenue, not because people don't love the country, but because the system refuses to respect its honest citizens.

Why do we lie when we buy an iPhone?

A few months back I switched from Android. When asked why I made the switch, my usual response is, because of good security features and superior camera quality, etc..

However, I've realised that I have been lying and my decision actually might have been influenced by more than just these things.

In fact, many of us justify our purchases of expensive brands, whether it's iphones, handbags, or clothing, by emphasizing factors like better quality and comfort.

But beneath these justifications lies a deeper, subconscious motivation – Conspicuous Consumption- the desire to showcase our social status.

Research by American economist and sociologist Thorstein Veblen sheds light on this phenomenon, which he termed "Conspicuous Consumption."

This concept refers to the tendency to purchase high-end, recognizable goods not solely for their utility but as symbols of prestige and wealth. And it's not limited to the wealthy; individuals from all economic backgrounds engage in this behavior, often without realising. Reason why many people buy iPhones on EMI.

Luxury brands capitalize on this tendency by pricing their products at premium levels, tapping into our desire to signal our social status through material possessions.

But can we break free from this cycle? Despite our awareness of its existence, peer pressure make it challenging to completely avoid conspicuous consumption.

So, the next time someone asks you about your expensive purchas, take a moment to reflect on your motivations. It is probably, a small step towards reducing such conspicuous consumption. 😀
