America has Warren Buffett, but Japan's most famous investor is 71-year-old Kiritani, who has a portfolio of over 500 stocks totaling over 400 million yen. He does not own a car and rides around everywhere in his bicycle. He's also known for his love of shareholder perks. /1
If you're running a small investment account (e.g. you're a broke retail investor) the best way to grow your account is to either contribute every month into an index fund automatically (and never touch it or look at it for 20-30 years) or you buy stocks that are out of favor, beaten down, and at depressed valuations that no one else wants (you minimize your downside and set yourself up for upside)
Let's give some love for one of my holdings, Okura Industrial, which is up 8.10% this morning.
Good earnings report released yesterday: record profts and management raising its dividend from 220 yen to 240 yen a share.
I love boring Japanese small caps and a fun way to go hunting for them is to search for Japanese companies based outside of Tokyo. This is how I found Okura Industrial, a company based in Kagawa. Up 56% ytd, net cash, dividend growth, and doing buybacks. A lot to like here
KT&G Corporation (Korea Tobacco & Ginseng) is the only Korean stock I'd buy having done just 30 seconds of research on it.
All I need to know is that it is a tobacco company
@CacheThatCheque Subnote on women:
Beware of pinoy that can speak English and seems traditional.
Add in a dose of “you so big” flattery and your hooked
She will destroy you
Hear me out: a younger Warren Buffett could have come to Japan and settled in during the bubble era and won elite gaijin life bingo several times over.
He’d have the autism for learning Japanese through rote memorization,
he’d be buying deep value Japanese stocks left and right that make him a fortune while also not getting wiped out in the post bubble crash, he’d have PR, 3 kids, a humble house in the Japanese equivalent of Nebraska (somewhere in Gifu or Toyama?) and his Japanese wife would be like his real life wife and would have introduced him to her own handpicked choice of mistress.
Buffett would be like Kiritani, he’d be on all the TV stations as some wacky, autistic, elite gaijin lifer investor who’d everyone would laugh at because he’d only eat at Saizeriya and McDonald’s and refuse to eat sushi or any Japanese food other than microwaved packages of rice despite living in Japan for decades
500m yen, JLPT N1, PR, a house, a Japanese wife, 2 or more children, and a mistress, and you win elite gaijin life bingo and have fully acclimated to Japanese culture

HTP share reaches 18.3% in Japan, solidifying #2 position ahead of glo (BAT)
@RetireInJapan I also notice many high end cars in Osaka. I think sometimes they're bought on credit, other times bought with company expenses, and other times bought as a way of gifting assets to family members
@uckema less than 3% of Japanese households have 100-500m yen in assets. Just 0.2% have 500m yen or more. Kiritani-san is defintely up there among the rich Japanese class and yet he lives like an autistic rat
Absolutely incredible.
In an unprecedented move, South Korea's stock market just collapsed -44% in 40 days, erasing -$2 trillion in market cap.
Now, South Korea's finance ministry has announced plans to "stabilize" the market.
What is happening? Let us explain.
