According to a witness interviewed by Qilu Evening News (齐鲁晚报), who had been waiting in line behind Liu, visitors paid 398 yuan (US$58) for a combined attraction package including the sky ladder and the drop. After the accident occurred, those still waiting in line were sent back via the sky ladder. This video shows that the sky ladder itself is already quite an intense experience... and likely not something you’d want to do again after just watching someone fall to their death.

The witness said visitors asked for refunds, but were only refunded for the swing and not for the sky ladder, which is frankly bizarre after witnessing a fatal accident and realizing they could just as easily have been the victim. For now, the attraction area has been closed, and it seems unlikely that Chongqing Adventure Camp will ever reopen.

In Liu's case, it is clear that she had not yet been pulled into the correct release position. She was still just exiting the platform when the rear rope (which keeps them connected to the rail system) was detached/released prematurely. Without any tension from the front rope, she fell straight down, and, based on witness accounts, she struck the rocks multiple times before landing.

Here's another video from the same location. There is an edit in between, but it clearly shows that the swing rope is anchored at a fixed point above the gorge, and that just before the release moment, the rope is tensioned and pulls the rider forward into the correct release position, away from the launch platform.

Seems the rope was released early than it should. Some netizens have noticed, the staff were not holding the end of the rope but rather the middle section. When the tourist slid outward, the rope became taut prematurely, causing the swing to be released too early. This system design is unreasonable, as it relies entirely on the ground staff to decide when to release the swing. Releasing too early can result in excessive potential energy causing a collision with the opposite side, or an improper descent angle leading to a crash into the same-side mountain.

🚨💔 Heartbreaking tragedy unfolds in China again. On May 3, a female tourist named Liu died in a horrific accident at Maliuyan Adventure Park in Sichuan’s Huaying City. Strapped into the “Waterfall Swing” — a 168-meter-high ride over a roaring waterfall — she repeatedly screamed “It’s not tied tight!” twice as staff ignored her and pushed her off the platform. She plummeted, slammed into the cliff, and was pronounced dead on the way to hospital.

This wasn’t bad luck. It was preventable negligence.

Once more, China’s booming adventure tourism industry puts profit before people, cutting corners on safety checks, training, and basic equipment. How many more lives must be lost before authorities treat human safety as a priority instead of an afterthought?

My deepest condolences to Liu’s family and friends. No one should ever have to beg for their life on a paid attraction — only to be ignored. Enough is enough. Safety cannot keep being sacrificed for tourism dollars. 💔
