Billions of people suffer from anemia, but there are cheap ways to reduce this—
There are few health problems that affect billions of people at any given time. There are even fewer that could be reduced substantially through pretty cheap interventions.
Anemia, a condition of reduced red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood, is one of them. Estimates suggest that one in four globally has anemia; that’s two billion people.
Around half to two-thirds of anemia cases are caused by nutritional deficiencies, especially iron.
Women and children are at a much higher risk of anemia because they often need more iron relative to the amount of calories they consume.
People are also at higher risk of anemia when they have low dietary diversity, which makes anemia much more common in lower-income countries, as the chart shows. Even in richer countries, it’s a significant problem.
But there are low-cost ways to improve this.
Putting children at the centre, nutrition support and a reduction of food costs are among the key focal areas for South Africa’s national development. Here’s why. https://t.co/F7SbTxHM7g

In this interview, I argue Cholera cases in SA should be much higher than the 166 detected & 600 suspected as the 32 confirmed deaths means that the Case Fatality Ratio (CRF) of 20% (detected cases) & 5.3% (suspected), when in Malawi the worst epidemic in Africa CFR was < 3% 1/2

Recently, the @nicd_sa issued a measles alert. Experts say measles can be fatal, especially to those with a weakened immune system and those not immunised.
This week the #keready doctors speak about the importance of childhood immunisation.
