@DJSnM If you want to model it reaching the moon, you could use DSMC, but you’d probably be good enough using a free-molecular solver that just calculates the particle motion with kinetic theory + external forces.

@DJSnM In general, you need rarefied gas dynamics to model plumes into vacuum. If you want high-fidelity simulations, you need a combination of CFD for within the vent and DSMC as it transitions to rarefied. It’s very expensive and made worse by having to model multi-phase flows.

During the proximity operations demonstration, Pilot Victor Glover will command Orion to maneuver near the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion Stage, helping teams prepare for future missions when Orion will dock with another spacecraft.

@SciGuySpace imo this is a poor defense to valid criticism of schedule. It hasn’t even been 1 day and you’re already shifting blame to NASA and private industry. They didn’t make these sweeping changes and plans. At least take a little ownership! For better or worse

@AstroPolicy @DJSnM I think canceling is probably off the table. Repurposing isn’t though. Gateway isn’t mentioned in the NASA Reauthorization Act so I think that leaves the door open?

@DJSnM People are throwing around cancellation but how would that work? The facts are, Gateway is clearly funded in the BBB, but not explicitly mentioned in the NASA 2026 Reauthorization bill.

Wouldn’t the only option be to repurpose it (assuming congress is onboard)?

@SpcPlcyOnline So Isaacman’s plan, after DOGE forced out tons of expert civil servants of which many turned to contracting, is to now force NASA to eliminate contractors? Effectively doubling the losses. Good luck convincing people to take a low pay, insecure civil servant job.

@SciGuySpace Good cover photo selection which shows how SpaceX Dragon’s thrusters create a plume environment that can potentially damage the ISS. Lots of analysis by NASA goes into making sure this doesn’t happen. It’s a common problem for all complex vehicles during proximity operations.

I’ve never seen any truly autonomous spacecraft for example. Have you?

@DJSnM That’s because Jared likely doesn’t realize yet that NASA has more than one supercomputer. Some of which are very specialized to solve problems quickly that support human spaceflight. Centralizing those would put astronauts at risk.
