The final report of the Teacher Education Expert Panel was recently released.

This is a crucial report that it's important for all Aussie teachers to be aware of.
So, is it any good?
In this thread, I answer this question, and particularly address:
Dear NSW teachers, You are on the right track. Keep moving toward systematic, structured reading instruction, including synthetic phonics. The results will come. https://t.co/b0V0rDf7bF
@MrDixonMath@ehanford@ellis_patrick I’ll add one more recommendation, if I may… “Reading for Life” by @lifelonglit for an excellent, eye-opening coverage of the topic. https://t.co/sP9hrRtEkQ
@PepsMccrea How to actually teach the basics of reading words to beginners would have been a good start. I still have the one page (double sided!) handout I received on the topics of phonological awareness and phonics.
@CodeReadNetwork Unbelievable isn’t it!! My teaching degree 20 years ago didn’t teach me how to teach reading; I had to return to Uni to self-fund further post-grad study to learn the basics that should be in every initial teaching degree.
@jaymi_thiessen Or in Australia, most of our schools for years have made use of the PM Benchmark assessment. Same levelled approach; same problems as F&P.
@JulieMavlian@DrLSHammond@SOTLAus Hi Julie - I was there for all but the final session. You missed my distant wave in your direction across the lunch crowd! 😆
The Simple View of Teaching! Thankyou #sotla Teachers need passion AND knowledge. It’s about time all university education faculties took note of people like @DrLSHammond
@MeganMcGay Something that NSW Dept did quite well in 2021… Every public school received a freebie starter set of decodable readers appropriate for Kindy/Foundation. (I’m fairly certain predictable/levelled readers are no longer referenced in any NSW / Nesa curriculum materials.)
@jdtdobson@ParkerPhonics@thelithill 😊 So you’re not going to be ‘that’ parent telling the teacher that their ‘gifted’ child can read already so they’ll be bored with phonics instruction ??
@SavvyB54448916 @robynbryant33@JaneCaro@likeAfrog101 With good reason (backed by good, freely accessible research that goes back decades), and with respect, the wave is not actually very ‘new’. There are plenty of ‘old’ classroom teachers on it too! https://t.co/Qmd5SAPqA8
