EPFL scientists have unveiled a swallowable bioprinter that can heal injuries from inside the body. Roughly the size of a capsule, the Magnetic Endoluminal Deposition System (MEDS) can be guided through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract using external magnets, where it dispenses a bio-ink onto ulcers or bleeding sites. The spring-loaded tip functions like a microscopic pen, activated by near-infrared light to print directly onto damaged tissue—without anesthesia, surgery, or electronics inside the capsule. In lab and animal tests, MEDS precisely deposited bioink to seal artificial ulcers and real stomach wounds. The bioink maintained structure for over 16 days, acting as a microbioreactor that could support healing by releasing growth factors and attracting new cells. This “pill that prints” merges bioprinting with smart ingestibles, paving the way for non-invasive tissue regeneration in the GI tract. If future trials confirm its efficacy, this approach could transform care for conditions like ulcerative colitis and gastrointestinal bleeding—shifting treatment from symptom management to true regenerative repair.
