Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour Indigenous strength, memory, and resilience.

In 𝘚𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴 (1991), Faye HeavyShield arranges twelve pale-yellow plaster shoes in a circle—a formation that, as scholar Richard William Hill observes, is at once protective and symbolic. The perimeter of shoes asks us to imagine not only the circle itself, but also the women who once stood within it:

“The twelve empty shoes, surely, conjure at least the spectres of the six bodies that would occupy them. We can’t see them as fully resolved figures, perhaps, but they represent HeavyShield and her five sisters... And we can recognize, if we haven’t already, that the circle is, in this case, also a defensive formation, with each woman facing out so that no one is left with their back exposed."

All the girls in HeavyShield's family were sent to residential school, and all endured abuses there.

Reflecting on the work Hill writes, "I felt I recognized these women—their strength and their predicament both. I saw in them my own mother and grandmother, and my aunties (biological or otherwise), all women whose strength and toughness held things together as well as possible through some of the darkest times."
