Possible Reasons for the China-Nepal Border Flash Flood

Possible Reason 1 - The Flash flood in the Bhotekoshi River appears May have been triggered by an ice avalanche that blocked the Lhende River, causing water to accumulate before the blockage suddenly failed and released a powerful surge downstream. A magnitude 4.4 earthquake also struck Tibetan territory around the same time, raising the possibility that seismic activity may have contributed to the ice/rock instability.

Possible Reason 2: Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF). Several large glacial lakes exist in the region; a Glacier lake burst may have also contributed to the event. Satellite and field investigations may take several days to establish the exact sequence of events.

The location is particularly significant because the same Lhende–Bhotekoshi corridor experienced a similar disaster on 8 July 2025. That event was subsequently confirmed through hydrological analysis and Sentinel satellite imagery as being triggered by a glacial lake outburst near the Nepal–China border.

On July 8, 2025 – Bhote Koshi / Rasuwagadhi - GLOF

A sudden flood swept through the Bhote Koshi/Trishuli system near the Nepal–Tibet border. It was later concluded that the flood was caused by the sudden drainage of a supraglacial lake in Tibet, north of the Langtang Himal. At least 11 people died and 19 missing, and the Friendship Bridge between Nepal and China was destroyed.

On August 26, 2026 – Bhote Koshi / Rasuwagadhi - ?

Today 2026 event appears to have been more severe than the 2025 flood, with a particularly devastating consequence: extremely short warning lead time and the absence of a real-time upstream warning system. The sudden release gave people downstream little or no time to evacuate, resulting in many people being swept away and extensive damage to settlements, bridges, roads and infrastructure. The death toll is expected to be significantly higher than that of the 2025 Bhotekoshi flash flood.

Rasuwagadhi is an important gateway for trekkers heading into the Langtang region, one of Nepal’s most popular trekking destinations. It is also a key transit route for travelers continuing toward Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar in Tibet, China.

Given the sudden nature of today’s flash flood and the extremely short warning time, many trekkers, tourists and travelers passing through the Rasuwagadhi area may have been caught completely unaware. Visitors unfamiliar with the terrain would have had very little understanding of the danger or time to reach safe ground.

Bhotekoshi ஆற்றில் ஏற்பட்ட திடீர் வெள்ளம், Lhende ஆற்றில் ஏற்பட்ட பனிச்சரிவு காரணமாக ஆற்றின் ஓட்டம் தற்காலிகமாகத் தடைப்பட்டதால் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என ஆரம்பகட்ட மதிப்பீடுகள் தெரிவிக்கின்றன. இதனால் தண்ணீர் upstream பகுதியில் தேங்கியிருக்கலாம். பின்னர் அந்தத் தடுப்பு திடீரென உடைந்ததால், மிகப்பெரிய அளவிலான வெள்ளநீர் downstream பகுதிகளுக்குள் வேகமாகப் பாய்ந்திருக்கலாம்.

அதே நேரத்தில், திபெத் பகுதியில் 4.4 ரிக்டர் அளவிலான நிலநடுக்கமும் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே, இந்த நிலநடுக்கம் பனி அல்லது பாறைச் சரிவைத் தூண்டியிருக்கக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பும் உள்ளது.

சாத்தியமான காரணம் 2 – பனிப்பாறை ஏரி உடைப்பு (GLOF)

இந்தப் பகுதியில் பல பெரிய பனிப்பாறை ஏரிகள் (Glacial Lakes) உள்ளன. எனவே, ஒரு பனிப்பாறை ஏரி உடைந்து ஏற்பட்ட Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF)-ம் இந்த வெள்ளத்திற்கு காரணமாக இருந்திருக்கக்கூடும்.

எனினும், இது தற்போது உறுதி செய்யப்படவில்லை. செயற்கைக்கோள் படங்கள் மற்றும் கள ஆய்வுகள் மூலம் வெள்ளம் எவ்வாறு உருவானது என்பதைத் தெளிவுபடுத்த இன்னும் சில நாட்கள் ஆகலாம்.

இந்தப் பகுதி மிகவும் முக்கியமானது. ஏனெனில், இதே Lhende–Bhotekoshi ஆற்றுப் பாதையில் 8 ஜூலை 2025-ல் இதேபோன்ற ஒரு திடீர் வெள்ளம் ஏற்பட்டது. அந்தச் சம்பவம் பின்னர் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட நீரியல் ஆய்வு மற்றும் Sentinel செயற்கைக்கோள் படங்களின் அடிப்படையில், நேபாள–சீனா எல்லைக்கு அருகிலிருந்த ஒரு பனிப்பாறை ஏரி உடைந்ததால் ஏற்பட்ட GLOF என உறுதி செய்யப்பட்டது.

8 ஜூலை 2025 – Bhotekoshi / Rasuwagadhi – GLOF

நேபாள–திபெத் எல்லைக்கு அருகே Bhotekoshi–Trishuli ஆற்றுத் தொகுதியில் திடீர் வெள்ளம் ஏற்பட்டது.
பின்னர் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட ஆய்வுகளின்படி, Langtang Himal-க்கு வடக்கே, திபெத் பகுதியில் இருந்த ஒரு supraglacial lake திடீரென வடிந்ததே இந்த வெள்ளத்திற்குக் காரணமாக இருந்தது.

இந்தச் சம்பவத்தில் குறைந்தது 11 பேர் உயிரிழந்தனர்; 19 பேர் காணாமல் போயினர். மேலும், நேபாளம்–சீனாவை இணைக்கும் முக்கியமான Friendship Bridge முற்றிலும் சேதமடைந்தது.

26 ஆகஸ்ட் 2026 – Bhotekoshi / Rasuwagadhi – காரணம் இன்னும் உறுதி செய்யப்படவில்லை

இன்றைய 2026 வெள்ளம், 2025-ஆம் ஆண்டு ஏற்பட்ட வெள்ளத்தைவிட மிகவும் தீவிரமானதாகத் தோன்றுகிறது. இந்தச் சம்பவத்தின் மிகப்பெரிய சோகமான அம்சம், மிகக் குறுகிய முன்னெச்சரிக்கை நேரமும், பயனுள்ள real-time upstream flood warning system இல்லாததுமாகும்.

வெள்ளநீர் திடீரென வெளியேறியதால், downstream பகுதிகளில் இருந்த மக்களுக்கு எச்சரிக்கை பெறவோ பாதுகாப்பான இடங்களுக்கு வெளியேறவோ மிகக் குறைந்த நேரமே கிடைத்திருக்கலாம். இதன் விளைவாக பலர் வெள்ளத்தில் அடித்துச் செல்லப்பட்டதுடன், குடியிருப்புகள், பாலங்கள், சாலைகள், நீர்மின் திட்டங்கள் மற்றும் பிற முக்கிய உள்கட்டமைப்புகளும் கடுமையாக சேதமடைந்துள்ளன.

வெள்ளத்தின் திடீர் தன்மை மற்றும் ஏற்பட்டுள்ள சேதங்களின் அளவை கருத்தில் கொண்டால், 2025 Bhotekoshi flash flood-ஐ விட இம்முறை உயிரிழப்பு எண்ணிக்கை கணிசமாக அதிகமாக இருக்கக்கூடும்.

சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளுக்கு ஏற்பட்ட ஆபத்து

Rasuwagadhi, Langtang பிராந்தியத்திற்குச் செல்லும் முக்கிய நுழைவுப் பகுதியாகும். Langtang, நேபாளத்தின் மிகவும் பிரபலமான trekking destinations-ல் ஒன்றாகும்.
மேலும், Rasuwagadhi வழியாக சீனாவின் திபெத் பகுதியில் உள்ள Mount Kailash மற்றும் Lake Mansarovar நோக்கிச் செல்லும் ஏராளமான பயணிகளும் கடந்து செல்கின்றனர்.

இன்றைய வெள்ளம் மிகவும் திடீரெனவும், மிகக் குறுகிய warning lead time-உடனும் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளதால், Rasuwagadhi பகுதியில் இருந்த பல trekkers, tourists மற்றும் பிற பயணிகள் முற்றிலும் எதிர்பாராத விதமாக இந்த flash flood-ல் சிக்கியிருக்கக்கூடும்.

குறிப்பாக, அந்தப் பகுதியின் நில அமைப்பையும் திடீர் வெள்ள அபாயத்தையும் நன்கு அறிந்திராத வெளிநாட்டு சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளுக்கு, ஆபத்தை உணர்ந்து பாதுகாப்பான இடத்திற்குச் செல்ல போதுமான நேரம் கிடைக்காமல் இருந்திருக்கலாம்.
