There are guys out there.
Guys who just quietly make something of themselves, and attract a great woman, and have a whole bunch of kids. And then spend the rest of their long, quiet, contented lives being fiercely devoted to their grateful kids and their dozens of grandkids.
They're just playing a completely different game than the rest of us clowns.
We get caught up in our little money games, dominance games, status games, prestige games. Our credentialism, careerism, and consumerism. Our follower counts, citation counts, or Series B valuations. Our sad little skirmishes in the culture wars. Our thousand varieties of engagement bait and social signaling. Our bottomless thirst for social and sexual validation.
Meanwhile, those guys are just keeping their heads down and building their mini-dynasties.
Maybe they end up owning the second most popular Kia dealership in the tri-state area, or work as senior logistics manager for a trucking company down in Springfield, or do the tax accounting for local businesses. They have no pretensions of shaping national politics or world events; they just guide their neighborhoods and cities to grow a little better in a hundred small but significant ways. Their jobs are just a means to an end, and the end is their family and their community. And their wives and kids admire them for it, decade after decade after decade.
Those guys won't even see this message. They're too busy to spend time on social media. Even if they're on X, their follower count is basically their extended family, their friends and neighbors, and a few folks from their congregation.
But God bless them, I say. They know what's up.
They're playing the long game.
While the rest of us are stumbling around trying to discover the meaning of life.
People hire people they like, they’re willing to train who they favor.
Go to the events. Bump elbows. Laugh at the corny jokes. Go to the happy hours. Research your interviewers and RELATE to them.
this bit from the joe rogan episode with quentin tarantino and roger avary really resonated with me
tarantino shares how he lost sight of his dream in his 20s, and seeing a colleague hitting 30 made him realize his mistake. sharing for anyone who is feeling lost in their 20s:
a truly amazing 😍short book on compilers for beginners
-only 230 pages of great content
-Only requirement: "theory of automata knowledge (TOC)", then you are good to go
-(TOC) because it's the bare minimum thing, if you want to learn about compiler design
-great for beginners for compiler design
-who want to get basics first, then this book is go to guide
-not too long not too short
urgency is a life hack
you need to be unreasonable when it comes to "not being able to do a thing"
like, anything at all. any reason someone says "you can't just do this" you need to feel extreme urgency to do it
you always need to work with urgency
my father always told me: “if you want to go for a run, go for a run, don’t look for company. sooner or later, on your fifth run or your twentieth, like-minded people will find you themselves.” and only recently have i realized that this principle works everywhere.
Big news for Durban's beachfront🏖️ eThekwini Municipality just inked a 45-year deal for Joe Cools' redevelopment👏
Many will be familiar with the nostalgic Joe Cools site at 137 Marine Parade, Durban (Erf 12281). For non-Durbanites, Joe Cools was the coolest place to be in its heyday. Picture it as a slightly different version of Cape Town’s Caprice, except more chilled and probably more popular because it is one of the only vibey restaurants on the beachfront.
The municipality issued an RFP (Request For Proposals) in November 2023. The winning tender was granted to Imvusa Trading 595 CC on a 45-year lease term. They will begin construction early next year after the necessary approvals have been achieved.
The new building will be 68% bigger than the existing one. 80 new jobs will be created during the construction period while all current jobs will be retained🙌
The redevelopment project is set to attract new tenants, including a Mugg & Bean restaurant, while retaining the existing national tenants, such as Wimpy, Steers, Fishaways, and Milky Lane.
The renders of the new development are below.
The municipality also has plans to redevelop the old “Funworld Site.” I’ll share more details and pics on this.

This is what made me detest negative self talk. Who are you to rob yourself of a positive imagination? The only realm inhabited by you… and you CHOOSE negativity? Wow!
People wonder why fraudsters can't use the same intelligence and effort to do legitimate work.
However, it's actually more difficult to do things right. It takes more effort to be good than bad.
When you have no conscience, you don't second-guess your decisions or think about who you hurt. You have a god-like complex because you're smart enough to get away with stuff others won't attempt.
So, when you see someone trying to make money the right way, they deserve accolades. It's crushingly hard.
Tattoo this to your brain:
"The world is a malleable place. If you know what you want, and you go for it with maximum energy and passion, the world will often reconfigure itself around you much more quickly and easily than you would think.”
