I'm a cardiologist. Everyone is sharing this study as a skin story. They're burying the part that matters.
Scientists took the aorta of a 75-year-old donor, applied a single engineered enzyme, and stripped away more than 70% of the molecular damage — bringing it down to the levels you'd see in a 30-year-old artery.
Published five days ago in Nature Communications. Revel Pharmaceuticals, with Calico and the University of Colorado.
Here's what they erased.
Sugar reacts with proteins in your body the same way heat browns bread — slowly, over a lifetime. It leaves behind a residue called CML, the most abundant advanced glycation end product in aging tissue. It welds itself onto collagen and elastin in your skin, your eye lens, and your arterial walls.
Two things follow. Your arteries stiffen. And CML latches onto a receptor called RAGE, which drives chronic inflammation — the exact fire I've been writing about for months as the engine of heart disease.
Since the 1980s this damage was considered permanent. Your body has no enzyme to remove it. Every existing approach only slows new damage from forming. Nothing touched what was already there.
So they built an enzyme that doesn't exist in nature. They screened 45,000 protein structures, then ran five rounds of directed evolution across more than 500 million variants until they had CMLase — a molecular lawnmower that oxidizes the CML off the protein and restores the original, healthy lysine underneath.
Not patched. Reversed.
Over 70% cleared from elderly arterial tissue. Over 55% from elderly skin — below the levels found in 31-year-old skin. 45-78% in lens proteins. The CEO said they expected 20% and were floored.
Arterial stiffness drives systolic hypertension, heart failure, and stroke, and I have no drug that reverses it. I can slow the process. I cannot undo it. This paper says undoing it may be possible.
The caveats are real and I won't skip them. This was done on donated tissue in a dish, not in a living person. No functional data yet — we don't know if that artery got measurably more elastic. Delivering a large enzyme deep into human tissue is a hard, unsolved problem. Clinical trials are years away.
But something considered permanent for forty years just came off human tissue.
We spent a century learning to slow aging. Someone finally figured out how to erase it.

I had an accident with my Tesla and have some interesting findings:
1. The emergency call was automatic (triggered by the airbag deployment?)
2. Only the middle airbag and the side curtains were deployed. Not the steering wheel airbag (Due to an offset collision while spinning?)
3. The driver door was automatically unlocked and opened.
4. The windows were automatically rolled down (to vent airbag smoke?)
5. The glovebox was automatically opened (to be able to retrieve the USB-drive?)
6. The whole car shutdown after a while and the driver door was only available to open through the emergency handle inside of the door.

All in all an excellent safety protocol from all perspective.

Some suggestions to the @Tesla team:
1. Send a push notification to the users of the Tesla app that has access to your vehicle, they are usually next of kin, that an accident has occured, preferably with some short info like "Low speed accident", "High speed accident" "Vehicle rolled over" and some additional info like "automatic emergency call initiated succesfully" and a position of the vehicle to make it easy for someone to drive over to check on them.
2. Put some large text on the screen on what has/will happen with the vehicle, like "Door automatically unlocked" "Vehicle automatic shutdown in 14:37 min" "Please dont forget any valueables in the car" "Retain the USB-drive for future reference with the insurance company" etc etc. Also with a spoken voice if the screen is broken.

On a hot July day, a single mature tree in your yard pumps somewhere around 100 gallons of water up from its roots and out through its leaves as water vapor. A mature elm with 150,000 leaves can clear that in a day.

As that water evaporates off the leaf surface, it carries heat away with it, the same basic physics that makes sweat work. The air around the canopy drops measurably.

The cooling effect of a single large tree transpiring 100 gallons of water is roughly equivalent to two household air conditioning units running all day. Except it runs on sunlight and groundwater, costs nothing, and has been doing it since before your house was built.

A yard with mature canopy runs 5 to 10 degrees cooler than a paved or treeless yard next door. That's not a feeling. It's a physics difference you can measure with a thermometer. The urban heat island is real, and it gets worse one removed tree at a time.

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is this weekend, before another hot ass July like this one comes around.
