This is the first time I have been embarrassed to be a student at JMU. Do better please we need to spread positivity and unite rather than sewing discord among the community to further divide us. Hate will not go unrecognized and the spreading of misinformation as egregious-
@ginocchio_k @psyc220 Yes I also have a passion to try and move past the stigma around mental illness, this would bring more people to seek care as well as making those receiving it not feel lesser as people. @psyc220 #CD7
@kolbee_w @psyc220 Yes, the cost of care specifically medical care can often times exclude a group from getting it, often times these are marginalized groups who may want or need it the most. @psyc220 #CD7
This would make the patients believe what their therapist/clinician is telling them. A way to improve this in the future would be to continue to reinforce the social or cultural models of disability and treat these disabilities as differences. @psyc220
#CD7 I’d like to be a clinician or therapist later on once my career path has become more apparent. In these fields I feel a large part of their reinforcement of oppression is that they would most likely use the medical model of disability for dealing with illness-
@ecdeboe @psyc220 Yes and the wording of “even in her condition” seem to imply that people with disabilities are lesser or should be honored that “regular” people even interact with them.
@KeiraMills333 @psyc220 Not only does it objectify him and highlight his normal as being on a lower or more difficult level than people without disabilities, it also seeks to motivate others implying that he is less fortunate and that they are more fortunate.
@Katevonnii @psyc220 Yes, often times what seems to people as something nice or in good faith is actually objectifying to certain individuals or communities, supercrip/inspiration porn are a great example of this.
@4ngel4tr4n @psyc220 Yes! Not only the uneven flooring but also the relatively uphill paths that take you up the quad are also pretty narrow and for someone using a wheelchair this could prove to be a barrier since it’s more difficult than it should be.
empowering, as if just running or moving in their normal mode of transportation is something remarkable and not just a variation of ways people do things that are seen as normal when disability is not involved.
#CD5b @psyc220
3) An example of things that come across as supercrip/inspiration porn are images from JMUs official sites. One image that I selected shows people with disabilities doing normal things like using a wheel chair or running with a prosthetic leg and that being-
This is not the fault of the accommodations but the fault of our community (not only just the University) being that some people think that it would be difficult to make friends with them since they perceive them as too different, or because they are prejudiced.
#CD5a @psyc220
1). As a University we do things like offering the disability accommodations and such that help to remove perceived barriers for disabled people, however people using these and being seen using them could create social barriers for them.
@MegCassidy26 @psyc220 Yes agreed! The focus of feminism is to bring equality to all genders and this also bleeds into race and class equality @psyc220 #CD4
@amandafrisby220 @psyc220 Yes! Feminism also includes equality for all genders, and the solidarity that would come with it also applies to all genders. @psyc220 #CD4
#CD4 @psyc220 Solidarity between individuals is because issues of gender inequality in every facet. Gender based oppression reflects heavily on people’s lives with simple things like men spreading their legs while sitting and women crossing their legs while sitting.
