If a player doesn’t play hard all the time, no skill they bring to the table can offset that. Playing hard is a prerequisite to playing. Period. Nobody succeeds by making half an effort. Make sure your players understand that laziness is unacceptable. Competing to WIN is a skill!
PLAYERS: There is no such thing as a neutral team member. You're either making the culture better or you're not. Your actions and attitudes help move the team forward or keeps the team from progressing as it should.
Communicating on the floor is something every player should be doing regardless of personality. When you walk across the line, you must compete; you must become someone different even if it’s uncomfortable. Dig deep. Find that dog in you! If you don’t communicate, you don’t play!
“Most people mistake speed and skill for talent. Real talent starts with energy, drive, work ethic and the will to win. Without these attributes, a player can never be great.” -Allen Fox
Fake more.
Most players fail to fake...enough, or ever.
"When should I fake?"
Before you catch. After you catch it. Before you dribble. After you dribble. Before you shoot. After you shoot (got ya😉)
The point is, fakes are undertaught, undervalued & underused.
Fake more.
PLAYERS: A pump fake, ball fake, pass fake, and simple jab step series will make you super hard to guard. All of these are super simple yet extremely effective. If you don’t already, add these to your game!
“Toughness is not thinking or accepting that you have a ceiling, but that you have another step to take, another level to reach, another gear”.
~ Tom Izzo
Let me be clear: ultimately, where you go to school won’t matter. Points you score, awards you win, the social media pictures/posts & all the fanfare will be forgotten. The ONLY thing of real importance is WHO you become. Don’t let temporary things eclipse what really matters!
