You'll have to forgive me if I'm not necessary celebrating our "freedom" when driving on I80 across the country after seeing thousands of cameras, plate readers, and WiFi/Bluetooth signal trackers every exit or two.

I'm reasonably positive that I got pulled over in Mississippi and my car searched because the system flagged my movements as suspicious since I'm a landscape photographer that just chases beautiful scenes. There was zero reason that I was pulled over and the cop never gave me one, even though I kept asking. I got no ticket and no warning. So this time I'm looking at cameras wondering if I'm gonna have another interaction while I just on my way to visiting my sick mother.

This is one of the reasons I rail against these kind of systems. It's a type of dystopian precrime system that is the beginning of having to always prove your innocence.

🚨America's newest Digital ID proposal just dropped in the US Senate.

Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn has introduced a new AI bill that bundles 17 different policies into one massive, 291 page bill.

This is just like all these other tech bills we've been seeing - a massive Digital ID framework - with universal age verification being the key to access to the tools.

The bill includes mandatory age verification for every existing account and freezing accounts until users verify their age.

What happens when a Flock camera misreads your license plate?

In the case of Brandon Upchurch, it meant being pulled over, attacked by a police dog, sent to the hospital, and then arrested.

The incident began when an automated license plate reader from Flock Safety incorrectly scanned Upchurch’s plate and flagged it as stolen. That alert was sent to a police officer, who treated the hit as confirmation that the vehicle was involved in a crime.

Upchurch was pulled over and confronted as if he were driving a stolen car. What followed escalated quickly, ending with a police dog being deployed and Upchurch hospitalized before ultimately being taken into custody.

All of this began with a camera reading a license plate wrong.

This is the reality of automated surveillance systems which have flaws. When the technology makes a mistake, it’s not the police officer or government who pays the price. It’s us, the people.
