This happens when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun while it is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit.

The "Ring": Because the Moon appears smaller than the Sun from our perspective, it doesn't completely block it out. Instead, a brilliant ring of light remains visible around the dark silhouette of the Moon.
