The startup named Donut Lab has introduced an electric vehicle motor that weighs 40 kg and can produce 857 HP.

The Finnish team, which previously developed and launched an electric motorcycle called the Verge TS, announced that they have developed five different motors, notable for their ring-shaped rotor.

For motorcycles, the company designed a 150 kW motor that fits inside a 17-inch wheel and weighs 21 kg. On the car side, they stand out with a product that weighs only 40 kg and delivers 857 HP with 4,300 Nm of torque (at the wheel level).

Donut Lab claims that using their in-wheel motor will reduce costs by € 2,000 per electric car, provide a weight advantage of 85 kg, and shorten production time due to fewer parts needed.

In-wheel hub motors offer both weight and efficiency advantages because they eliminate the need for parts like reduction gears, differentials, and half shafts found in today's automobiles. However, despite numerous hub motor car projects over the decades, no high-volume production vehicle has been successfully brought to market yet.
