Of the thousands of temples in India, there are exactly three that hold two of Hinduism's highest honours at once.
Srisailam is one of them. And it sits in Andhra Pradesh.
If you visit only one temple in your life, it should probably be this one.
Let me tell you why 🧵
Srisailam is dedicated to Lord Shiva as Mallikarjuna, and Goddess Parvati as Bhramaramba.
And here is what makes it almost unique in all of India.
It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the holiest abodes of Shiva, where he is worshipped as a pillar of divine light.
AND it is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas, the sacred seats of the Goddess.
Only three temples in the entire country hold BOTH titles at once.
Which means at Srisailam, you don't choose between Shiva and Shakti. You receive the blessing of both the divine masculine and the divine feminine in a single place. There is nowhere more complete.
The two stories behind it are beautiful.
WHY IT'S A JYOTIRLINGA:
When Shiva and Parvati held a contest between their sons, Ganesha and Kartikeya to decide who would marry first, Kartikeya lost, felt hurt, and left for a distant hill in anger. A heartbroken Shiva and Parvati followed their son to comfort him. The hill where they stayed became Srisailam. A father and mother, chasing a sulking child up a mountain. Even the gods.
WHY IT'S A SHAKTI PEETHA:
When Sati immolated herself and a grief-stricken Shiva carried her body across the land, Vishnu severed it to release him from his sorrow. The pieces fell across the subcontinent, each becoming a Shakti Peetha.
At Srisailam, it is believed, the upper lip of the Goddess fell. And the name itself, Mallikarjuna.
"Mallika" means jasmine. "Arjuna" is Shiva.
A princess named Chandravati once fled to this hill and saw a cow quietly pouring its milk over a stone shaped like a Lingam, day after day. Believing the stone was Shiva himself, she began worshipping it garlanding it every day with jasmine flowers. Malle, in the local tongue. Shiva worshipped with jasmine. Mallika-arjuna. The name has lived ever since.
The details that stay with you.
The temple sits in the Nallamala hills, on the banks of the Krishna river here called Pathala Ganga, the underground Ganga.
Remember the serpent I once mentioned, Adisesha lying across the land, hood at Tirupati, coils at Ahobilam (see comment)? His TAIL rests here, at Srisailam. This is the end of that sacred serpent.
They call Srisailam "Dakshina Kailasam" the Kailash of the South. Ancient texts say if Mount Kailash is the first abode of Shiva, Srisailam is the second. And a gentle local legend says a tiger once came to the temple every single day to worship the Lord, divine protection extending even to the wild.
The history runs to the very roots of Indian civilisation.
Inscriptions here date to the Satavahana dynasty, the 1st and 2nd century AD. It is named in the Skanda Purana, the Shiva Purana, and the Mahabharata. The Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Reddy kings, and the Vijayanagara emperors each added to it over the centuries.
Adi Shankaracharya came here and composed the Shivananda Lahari in praise of this Lord.
The oldest belief of all, that simply seeing the peak of Srisailam frees a soul from the cycle of birth and death.
We travel across the country chasing famous darshans.
And here, on a forested hill in Andhra, stands one of only three places on earth where Shiva and Shakti are worshipped as one, a temple older than most of recorded history, where even a glimpse of the peak is said to grant liberation.
If you make only one pilgrimage in this life, make it this one.
శివుడు, శక్తి ఒక్క చోట కొలువైన పుణ్యభూమి. ఇది మన శ్రీశైలం. 🙏

Hearing funny arguments about Virat Kohli being Selfish and obsessed with personal milestone.
Yes Kohli is selfish, selfish enough to follow the dream of a billion people, selfish enough to strive for excellence even after achieving so much, selfish enough to set new benchmarks, selfish enough to ensure his team wins.
Yes, Kohli is selfish.
