The wider Middle East is stuck in a dangerous cycle of attacks, counterattacks, and fragile ceasefires. Iran’s strikes on commercial shipping violate international law and the Memorandum of Understanding.
Our Gulf partners play a vital role in regional stability, and it was good to be joined by GCC representatives today.
The EU seeks closer ties with the Gulf. Last night, the EU and Bahrain launched negotiations of new strategic partnership agreement.
With the GCC partners, we discussed the latest development and how we can protect the freedom of navigation both in the Gulf, but also in the Red Sea.
My press remarks following today's Foreign Affairs Council ↓
Just 36% of the Sustainable Development Goals targets are on track or making progress.
Our mission is clear: to accelerate progress at scale & speed.
Together, let’s summon the leadership, financing & solidarity this mission requires, and build a brighter future for all.
A new UN Political Declaration on #HIV/AIDS recommits countries to ending #AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. But the four foundations of HIV control—multilateralism, financing, rights, and access to innovation—each face stark opposition. Read more: https://t.co/LZX38Kz1Ls
A message of condolence from The King and Queen following the passing of His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Father Amir of the State of Qatar.
We’re sanctioning Russia at speed and scale.
Today’s measures, together with the upcoming 21st sanctions package, will add 250 individuals and entities to the Russia sanctions regime.
This is our biggest round of individual designations since Moscow’s 2022 full-scale invasion, and includes also the EU’s largest-ever cyber sanctions package.
The financial backbone of Russia’s war machine is the main target. Every measure weakens Moscow’s ability to wage war.
My doorstep ahead of today’s Foreign Affairs Council ↓
I am deeply concerned by the serious escalation & renewed military confrontations in the Gulf, including the Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz, the attacks by the US on Iran, and the attacks by Iran on targets in the neighboring countries.
These attacks must all stop.
A return to full-scale hostilities would have catastrophic consequences – for the peoples of the region, for international peace & security & for the global economy.
I urge Iran & the US to urgently resume negotiations & to address outstanding issues through diplomacy.

Heartfelt condolences to the leadership and people of Qatar on the passing of father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. Having had the chance to meet him a few times, I saw firsthand his vision and incredible dedication to building modern Qatar. May his soul rest in eternal peace. #Qatar
🇵🇰 Today, the 9th #OIC Ministerial Conference on Women opened in Islamabad, 57 Member States, one hall, one question: how do we move from commitment to consequence for women across the OIC?
But before the flags were raised and the senior officials & ministers took their seats, there was this. 👇
⏳ Teams of the Ministry of Human Rights and #UNWomen Pakistan, for more than 16 hours a day, several weeks, with weekends that quietly disappeared, worked day and night to pull this all together.
🙏 Appreciation to the Ms. Saba Sadiq, Parliamentary Secretary, Human Right, Honourable Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, Secretary Abdul Khalique Sheikh, Dr. Arif Laghari, and the entire team of MoHR who made it possible for Pakistan to host the OIC.
🤝 UN Women Pakistan is proud and deeply honoured to have supported the Ministry of Human Rights, Government of Pakistan in convening this Conference, under the theme Socio-Economic and Political Empowerment of Women in OIC Countries: Challenges and the Way Forward.
✍️ Pakistan is not simply hosting a conference. It is holding the pen on the Islamabad Declaration, an instrument that can anchor women's economic participation, political voice, protection from violence, and access to justice as shared priorities across the OIC, not aspirations we return to every few years.
🙏 To the team at MoHR, and to my own colleagues at UN Women under the leadership of Jamshed M. Kazi you worked hand in glove, without ceremony and without a break. You are the reason the substance is strong. Diplomacy is visible. The work that makes diplomacy possible almost never is.

Day 1 down.

I welcome the opening session of Syria’s People’s Assembly - a key milestone in the country's political transition. The parliament has a vital role in passing urgent legislation in this critical phase. We will follow its work closely and stand ready to support. @UNinSyria@UNDPPA
Nomadic and migrant families are more likely to fall out of contact with health systems, leaving children at greater risk of missing out on lifesaving vaccines.
Here’s how Pakistan’s health teams are working to reach 1.6 million migrant and mobile children with essential immunisation services: https://t.co/AAyW4VMPKB
For more than 5500 people with kidney failure in Sudan, access to dialysis is the difference between life and death.
I am deeply grateful to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, through @KSRelief_EN, for its generous US$5 million contribution, enabling @WHO to sustain lifesaving dialysis services across Sudan.
This is the power of partnership in action. Together, we are protecting essential health services for those who need them most, even in the most challenging circumstances, and reaffirming our shared commitment to health, hope and dignity for all.
