The US used nearly two-thirds of its Patriot missiles against Iran. Now the $58.6B plan to replace them is screwed.

Making Patriot missiles requires precision ball screws, and buying one can take years. Only a handful of US shops make the military grade. Demand is up as much as 50 percent since 2020. Most of those shops are already running at full capacity, and adding more means buying new grinding machines and hiring experienced machinists to run them.

A ball screw converts a motor's spin into a straight push. Steel balls roll in a spiral groove, so about 90 percent of the motor's effort becomes push, against 20 to 40 percent for a plain screw. With the best grade, C0, the nut can travel 30 centimeters and end up within only 4 microns of where it should be, one twentieth of a hair.

Cold-forming the thread inside a ball screw nut 13 mm in diameter takes about 3 seconds. Grinding the same thread takes about 6 minutes. Aerospace screws are hardened to 60 HRC first, which warps the bar, and then ground in a room held at 20°C.

If you warm a 30-centimeter steel screw by one degree, it grows 3.6 microns. That alone uses up almost all of the 4 microns the best grade allows.

Umbragroup's plant in Saginaw, Michigan, grinds aerospace ball screws. In the early 1940s it built the first ball screw used on the B-29 bomber. Eight decades later, 173 people work there.

I spent over two decades in counterterrorism and I’m still involved in many ways, so here are my views on what I see has happened over the past 24-36 hours in the UK:

Five British men in their twenties were arrested on Sunday near RAF Fairford on suspicion of explosives offences and the preparation of a terrorist act. On Monday they were released on police bail.

That’s not what the terrorism clock looks like when the investigators are still in charge of it.

Under ordinary UK criminal law a suspect can be held for 24 hours, stretched to 36 by a superintendent, and to 96 hours by a magistrate.

But under section 41 of the Terrorism Act the first hold is 48 hours, not 24 hours. A judge can then extend it, in stages, up to 14 days without a charge. If the case merits it, it can even be pushed to 28 days. That 14-day cap exists for exactly this kind of file of vans, an airbase the United States uses, a possible foreign hand, explosives (if there were any) and interviews that are not finished on the first night.

Counter-terrorism police said the inquiry isn’t over. They said conditions apply. They said a state link has not been ruled out. Those sentences he said only make sense if the evidence trail was still live. A live trail is why Parliament built the two-week window.

But watching the guy read out the statement showed me in his body language, tone and eye movements that releasing those five men was NOT his or his department’s decision.

Walking five men after roughly a day is what you do with a pub fight, not with a suspected terrorist attack on a bomber base.

I’ve sat in enough interrogation rooms to know the difference between a custody clock and a political ceiling. Nobody had to shout an order down a phone. Someone in the political building above the investigators decided that charging British nationals on Monday, with Iran already denying it, Washington watching the runway, and a Labour conference where the main topics of discussion were prioritizing Palestinian and other refugees settling in the UK, was uglier than bail and a holding statement.

The law allowed them to keep the door shut. Yet the door opened anyway in half of the most minimum time.

That’s the story. That for me is the only story here. Not “they were innocent.” Not “the case collapsed.” The statute was not exhausted, but the appetite was.

The real question is who, and most importantly, why?

Police say they planned it, disabled his truck so he couldn't leave, beat him with rocks, bragged about leaving him for de*d... and bond was set at $12,500.

His name is Yordanis Herrera.

On June 11th, he was at the Sanibel Boat Ramp with his wife.

According to the arrest affidavits, three men pulled into that parking lot in a white BMW and a black Ram pickup.

They found his Ford F-150.

Police say they slashed the tires so the truck wasn't going anywhere.

Then they hid in the bushes around the lot and waited for him to come back.

When he did, investigators say all three came out of the bushes holding ROCKS and surrounded him.

He tried to run.

Police say Hansel Pompa Mauri tackled him from behind, forced him to the ground, and held him there.

Then, according to the affidavit, Dayan Estrada De Armas and Roberto Antonio Estrada De Armas beat him with the rocks OVER AND OVER in the face.

By the time it was all over, he had deep lacerations and hematomas to his head and face.

Police say one of them was RECORDING IT while it happened.

Police say Pompa Mauri stomped on his phone and destroyed it.

Then all three left.

A witness told police she saw the white car heading north on Causeway Boulevard... right past Yordanis's wife, who was still on the beach.

And someone inside yelled: "We left him there de*d."

IT GETS WORSE.

Nothing happened for almost THREE MONTHS.

All three are charged with conspiracy and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Bond for the two men accused of swinging the rocks? Just $12,500 each.

Bond for the man accused of tackling the victim and holding him down while it happened? $13,500.

BREAKING: The US and China have reached a trade deal to lower tariffs on $30 billion worth of "non-sensitive goods" after President Trump and President Xi met this week.
