Every monsoon, entire villages watch the Ganga swallow homes, farmland and roads. A proposed ₹3,600 crore riverbank protection project now aims to provide a long-term solution to one of West Bengal's most persistent challenges. The project will be jointly funded by the Union Government and the West Bengal government under a 50:50 cost-sharing model, marking one of the state's largest planned investments in erosion control.

Around ₹2,500 crore is expected to be spent in Murshidabad, focusing on the highly vulnerable Farakka–Bhagabangola–Lalgola stretch. Protection works are also planned across erosion-prone areas of Malda, covering the Ganga, Bhagirathi, Phulahar and Mahananda rivers. If approved, the project could safeguard thousands of families, protect agricultural land, strengthen embankments and significantly reduce annual monsoon losses across many districts of Bengal.
