@Zoom
Dear Zoom,
I just had a very scary hack involving North Korea/Lazarus and its crypto scam/theft industrial complex. I am sure you are blissfully unaware, your platform is being used to enrich a country that enslaves its populace.
The timeline goes as follows: a close friend's telegram was hacked and his account messaged me on telegram to set a catchup meeting. I happily indulged but was swiftly disappointed on the day of the meet when he sent me a Zoom link instead of Google Meet or another service... WHY??? I joined despite my reservations with Zoom calls, seeing my friend's face immediately on screen.
What happened next happened very quickly -- zoom asked me to update my app as the audio wasn't working. Again, I could see my friend's face on the screen (I didn't know his face had been deepfaked by North Korean gigabrains.). Normally, an update for a call app might trigger suspicion. However, because Zoom's app is complete horseshit, I felt this 'update' was completely normal. I completed the update, and of course, Zoom Audio still wasn't working -- again, completely normal for Zoom! I decided to call my friend on my iPhone when the bad news was immediately shared with me -- he had been hacked on telegram, and the video I was seeing of his face was a *DEEPFAKE*.
I went to cleansing every single device, password, etc I have ever used on this device/network and am still in that process. Thankfully I haven't lost any $ (yet)
Had this been a Google Meet call, I would have known immediately that Google Meet's software isn't coded by PissDevs like Zoom's, and doesn't require an update everytime you open the app. My instincts would have kicked in and I would have known something was off. Instead, with Zoom, you expect dogshit updates that don't even work once executed -- I routinely join zoom calls 7 minutes late because of forced updates or other issues.
The lesson here isn't about operational security or being careful with passwords and private keys. The lesson here is to *NEVER USE ZOOM AGAIN*.
Fuck you @Zoom
