For nearly three years, we’ve warned where this is leading.

When extremist voices are given free reign to relentlessly demonize Israel, attack anyone who supports its right to exist, and push Jews out of political and civic spaces, we shouldn’t be surprised when antisemitism rises, when more people traffic freely in antisemitic language, and when Jews are left legitimately less safe in day-to-day life.

I’m tired of explaining that you can criticize Israeli government policy without being antisemitic; what we’re seeing manifest every day is not simply criticism of Israeli government policy. Leaders need to stop pretending it is because loud voices online insist on it.

Jews are being threatened and attacked nearly every day. They are being made to feel that they must hide being visibly Jewish, conceal their Zionism, or stay silent about a fundamental part of their identity in order to participate fully in public life.

Antisemitic slurs and hate are becoming part of everyday social media conversation. And when a society starts to normalize hatred of one select group, it never ends there. What happens online does not stay online.

I’m grateful to @RepJeffries, @RepPeteAguilar, @SenBooker, @SenatorSlotkin, and other Democrats who spoke out yesterday against Piker’s comments. And I’m grateful to @SenTedCruz, @RepMikeLawler, and other Republicans willing to confront the ongoing horrific antisemitism coming from Tucker Carlson and Candace Owens. Antisemitism does not become tolerable because it comes from someone on your side.

I get it, it’s easy to demand action from leaders on social media. And I know what it's like to be an elected official and be targeted for taking a principled stand. But leadership requires speaking up even when it's uncomfortable, inconvenient, or unpopular.

So my ask of leaders across the political spectrum is simple:

Don’t wait until another synagogue is vandalized. Don’t wait until another Jew is attacked for wearing a Star of David. Don’t wait until after the consequences of hate are visible in your community to condemn it.

Use your platform now. More leaders should do what some did yesterday: speak up. Call out rhetoric that demonizes Jews, fuels antisemitism, or pushes any group out of our democratic life, including and especially when it comes from your own side of the aisle.

That is what principled leadership requires. Because silence is too easy when someone else pays the price.
