How fit are our underage GAA players really?
A new 10-year study tracked thousands of inter-county footballers from U14 → U21.
It’s the most detailed picture yet of how Irish players grow stronger, faster and fitter, and where progress plateaus 🧵
Been receiving tons of messages with girls soccer teams dropping like flies during pre-season.
I hate to say it...but I call it every year.
When coaches program too much too soon, do mindless conditioning with no gradual plan in place, that equals injury.
ACL injuries are not a female problem. They're a LOAD problem.
Full podcast I did on pre-season load spikes causing injuries: https://t.co/GabIkyD2v9
The most wild message I got:
"Perfection is impossible.
In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches.
But what percentage of points did I win?
54%
In other words, even top ranked tennis players win barely more than half the points they play.
When you lose ever second point on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot.
You teach yourself to think:
'Okay, I double faulted...it's only a point.'
'Okay, I came to the net and I got passed again...it's only a point.'
Even a great shot, an overhead backhand smash that ends up on ESPN's top 10 playlist – that too is just a point.
Here's why I'm telling you this.
When you're playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world. And it is.
But when it's behind you, it's behind you.
This mindset is crucial – because it frees you to fully commit to the next point with intensity, clarity, and focus."

At 29 I sat on my rooftop of my condo overlooking Chicago thinking if I wasn’t such a pansy I would just jump off & end it.
I was recently cheated on & divorced.
I was drinking 6 days a week & popping pills like they were skittles.
I was around drinking buddies often, but ALWAYS FELT ALONE.
I couldn’t get off the couch for days during some periods.
I felt my best days were behind me & couldn’t see a way out.
It was the lowest depression I’ve ever experienced.
And then………
GAA players (& Managers…for the day that’s in it🙄🤣)
IT’S OK TO TALK
And tell the truth
Honestly!
The sky won’t fall in
And you can still be a brilliant player
And win (huge) matches
Just go & enjoy the whole thing more
It only comes once ⚽️😉
Reporter: “You can’t practice the pressure, the tension..” or some in GAA say you can’t peak too soon, you can’t play every game like your “life depends on it”. This answer reminds me of an “intention” Jim Gavin set out “everyone chases excellence, there are no small games”. A year Dublin won - The O’Byrne Cup, The National League, The Leinster Championship and The All Ireland (every competition entered) every game matters
Prone overhead press is a great exercise for the shoulders. I love including these in athletes’ warm-ups.
With these, I often see athletes go too heavy & not do them properly. You don’t need much weight, the muscles we’re targeting are small. I have 2kg each hand in the video.
Happy belated 65th birthday to John Corvan, what a goal this was in an NFL encounter during February 1993 in Cork! https://t.co/NQhLrugY5H via @YouTube
Novak Djokovic is always hunting for signs of weakness across the net. Eye contact is a big part of the game for the tennis genius. https://t.co/NKyMWswH1k
If you have 2 minutes please give this a listen.
“Can I correct you, Mental Strength is not a gift, its learned through work and practice”
Down side .. “Weakness is practiced and learned as much as strength is!”
