@a3voices@paulg Harm. Conflict of interest. It incentivizes people to choose what benefits them financially instead of what benefits their constituents. Like buy a penny stock and then use legislative influence to harm that company’s competitors instead of to maximize benefit for taxpayers.
@petespetes@cory FYI, the Green building is not a dorm—it’s labs and offices. So doing this (in 2012, w/o AI) involved gaining access to all those rooms. And the real difficulty was that it was done in secret: the building’s occupants did not know about it during the months of prep.
@crictorz@steph_palazzolo It’s not absurd. It’s selling smart bullets that will only fire on lawful targets, and then the buyer asks you to disable the smart only-lawful-targets part. Also, these same smart bullets can instead be used to cure cancer, transform education, and develop clean fusion.
@rschmied Devil's advocate: When not using a good document template, a common low-tech formatting time-saver is to open the last document created and then edit the body. It's plausible that someone opened a letter from the day before and replaced the text, but forgot to edit the date.
@CourageHabit@DHSgov This is an American, a nurse. He was filming with his cell phone while carrying a licensed concealed weapon--a gun which he did not draw, even when ICE agents attacked and subdued him. Then they found his gun at his waist. After he was on the ground and disarmed, they shot him.
@Dundrum1960Guy@BretWeinstein Clarification: There are about 50M immigrants (around 25M from Latin America) but over 2/3 of them are legal. The illegal immigrant population peaked at ~14M. About 1/2 of US immigrants are Latino. About 1/4 are from Asia. https://t.co/xGcTAWvYiJ
@Cackalacky2 @ericweinstein@POTUS It is. It’s far worse. He’s the president. He is not some rando bot account. He is supposed to put his personal agenda and self-interest aside for the good of the country.
@AvailableLite9@GavinNewsom Wrong. He was in office for the whole thing. Census offices were all opened in 2019. The actual census ran January 2020 - October 2020. Trump left office on January 21, 2021, three months after the 2020 census was completed. Name-calling and lies in all caps don’t change facts.
@paulg@tylerpalmer I strongly suspect bots as well. And there are classes of inflammatory posts which seem to exist solely for the purpose of driving wedges between groups of people. Not sure who/what is behind those, but if that’s their goal, they are effective.
@satomiekou @dhh@jetbrains “Police officer”. “Firefighter”. Say what you will about these settings, but “fireperson” is a ridiculous strawman. Most people here in the US switched to saying “firefighter” rather than “woman fireman” 30-40 years ago.
@michaelharrigan You may be angry. You may feel like the half of the US that is more left-leaning than right are all violent criminals. But they are not. Your feelings aren’t facts either. Mentally ill people do, in fact, go kill people because they are mentally ill. Not because they are liberal.
@OntologicalMax@pickover We don’t replace stones after drawing. So in your 4 stone scenario, after drawing E there is a 1/3 chance of drawing the other E but a 2/3 chance of drawing O. So a 1/3 chance of drawing 2 that match in parity (sum=E) and a 2/3 chance of drawing 2 that don’t match (sum=O).
@primord_io@Jonathan_Blow The economy is not O’Leary’s area of expertise. It’s economists’. So who else should she talk to prep for asking questions about the economy?
@HDTVCamera@WallStreetApes Journalists should challenge the people they interview as well as controversial positions. Trump is controversial. And extraordinary measures demand extraordinarily good justifications. If journalists aren’t asking questions like this, they are not real journalists.
@lefoudubaron@JamesSurowiecki Yes. And it agrees with what he said. Epsilon times phi is just a constant. Subtracting m_i (exports) from x_i (imports) gives the trade deficit. So the whole right side of the equation is just trade deficit divided by imports, times a constant. Which is what Surowiecki said.
Just figured out where these fake tariff rates come from. They didn't actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did. Instead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the country's exports to us.
So we have a $17.9 billion trade deficit with Indonesia. Its exports to us are $28 billion. $17.9/$28 = 64%, which Trump claims is the tariff rate Indonesia charges us. What extraordinary nonsense this is.
