my wife got her new drivers license in 20 mins without a human interaction. The automatic kiosk included: eye exam, physical check biometric collection, forms, license printing. She could’ve done this anywhere in china.
The efficiency was staggering.
Wow! This Mark Carney WEF speech is so courageous and constructive! For the first time in a long time, I am inspired about the state of the world as a Canadian and as a believer in cooperation and internationalism. https://t.co/3VgGLYU8Ar via @YouTube
Luckin Coffee has overtaken Starbucks in China. All my friends have switched. Same quality coffee, 1/3 the price. even wealthy people have embraced it.
This reminds of the conversation a couple years ago with friends who were buying BYDs to replace their GLS and 7 series cars.
Each path tells such a different story about resources, priorities, and how families navigate the system.
We felt we were building a village to raise these kids. I wonder how far the village will go with the kids going to different schools.
Voltaire grew up surrounded by amazing neighbourhood kids in our little compound in Beijing. The COVID years brought all our families together in ways we never expected - shared meals, impromptu playdates, and kids running between apartments like they owned the whole place.

Back in Canada after 20 years in China and one thing is very different: Canadian men actually go home. They're coaching hockey practices, mowing lawns and cursing at IKEA manuals. Men in China? They're either entertaining clients or camping at the office, while their homes run on
autopilot–maids, grandparents and maintenance crews handling everything. The math is simple. In China, why DIY when labor is cheap? Everyone optimizes for their "highest economic value." Here in Canada, where a plumber's visit costs a week’s groceries, we become renaissance men.
Canada did not just get stabbed in the front by Trump. The Biden administration has also left us holding the bag. Effective middle power countries play the great powers off each other rather than cuddle on the lap of just one.
Whether Trump blinked or not this time around is not important. Canadian's "value-based" alliance-building under Harper and Trudeau has proven to be naive and our total adoption of US foreign policy has left us vulnerable. Global geopolitics is based on power dynamics.
