@wwxwashere Respectfully, what material did your archive cover? AO3 is almost entirely text-only storage, which is incredibly inexpensive (especially with on-prem servers.) The management costs don’t scale linearly. It’s not that different to manage 50tb of text vs 100tb. Or am I missing sm?
@SpideyS07542977@seungminkim The teacher was in the middle of wrestling with the gunman (after throwing the phone) when the dad ran in. Apparently he shot the gunman as he was wrestling the teacher. (The wrestling teacher is not the teacher who died or the teacher who was hospitalized with shots to her arms)
@dubbs421@MattWallace888 The state won’t press charges this time. Oregon is in the middle of a hotly contested governor’s race rn, where a republican might win for the 1st time in decades. If the sitting Gov allowed charges, the outrage would hand the election to republicans.
This is why school districts are so hesitant to pull the damn screens. In Oregon, they have the capability to admin pen-and-paper standardized exams, but the ODE test handbook forbids it except for kids who are blind/photosensitive/etc. Can’t offer them out of preference.
I had my kids parent teacher conference today.
As a physician who’s spent my entire adult life being tested, I was stunned by the “results” on my 5 year olds school assessment.
His teacher told us he’s one of the strongest math students in the class....he’s already doing simple multiplication. But the computer based test came back low, especially in math. The reason? He doesn’t know how to use a Chromebook yet.
The advice from his top rated academic school we send him to. Have him spend more time on the computer so he can do better on the next test.
We’re no longer measuring what a kindergartner actually knows. We’re measuring how well he can click, drag, and navigate a screen. At five?!
At 5...we are already starting to teach for the test? Insane
@educator4ever36 Extra time makes sense for disabilities that slow one’s ability to write or type (like writing with turned in wrists from cerebral palsy or typing when missing most fingers.) But for normal intelligence ADHD type kids, it just reinforces bad habits that come back to haunt.
@NichCarrol If traditional publishing is one's goal, fanfic is probably one of the better ways to start. Trad publishers don't do much in the way of marketing. Building an organic audience with fanfic is easier. Link to your socials, and later your completely original stories may sell better
@AlexKontorovich Tentatively in agreement. I think the concept of the properties does need to be taught, and they need some kind of name. But I haven't met many 4th graders that could define "commutative" and so I doubt memorizing the term "commutative property" actually helps them.
@janecoaston Seems like there's a workaround. People will take themselves to any number of personal appearance maintenance facilities every week/month (barber, eyebrow threaders, waxers, nail salons, etc.) We could have mall kiosks you could drop by for a weekly 10-second shot and a sticker.
@LadyNimby It is probably a little genetic (a decent chunk of personality is a combo of genes and uterine environment.) It's also probably in part because you're pregnant, which tends to send sensitive kids over the top instinctively. Just keep doing what you're doing by not giving in.
@0Beanie05923291 Seems like an unstoppable force meets an immovable object. Unions can’t defeat IDEA. (And also if more kids got placed in therapeutic settings, school budgets would be even worse. That one kid will cost a cumulative ~$1.2 million in district-paid tuition alone for 1-12 grade.)
@MildlyAmusing00@mattvanswol His dad is deranged, too. His dad was convicted of two counts of sexual assault when the dad was just 11 years old. We only know this (record should be sealed since he was a juvenile) because his dad’s juvenile record was given to the press.
@TardDunderThome@CrystalStarr78@mattvanswol I don’t think his teachers think they’re going to fix him. He strangled his kindergarten teacher the year before, and the admin (the one who wouldn’t let them search him) sent him right back. K teacher threatened to quit on the spot, and only then was he removed until 1st grade.
@ChrisNkyw@Cratscadle The teacher restraining him is seated in front of the class behavior chart. Usually these work by starting all kids on the yellow card, then either demoting them to orange-> red for bad behavior or up to green for good. We see there are three poorly behaved kids in this class.
@BugsySiegerkfy@catturd2 Word on the street is that this 2024 incident (so after what he did to teacher Abby Zwerner) is the same kid. https://t.co/QCStCpZVWI
@greg_ashman Everyone has two weeks to send a kind, “just asking questions” email to their district superintendent to get it in writing that “our district doesn’t emphasis memorization” and ideally elicit the key buzzwords like productive struggle. Then you can FOI request them in a month.
Oh my goodness, I have been waiting for this. Currently reading an email from our district leadership which talks about their commitment to focusing on “math instruction that emphasizes class discussion and a deeper understanding…”
@JamesAFurey It would be wonderful if teaching colleges had a checkpoint exam (a mini praxis) at the end of the first semester which prevents students from proceeding through expensive coursework until they can pass it. Could even waive it if the student had at least a 25 ACT equivalent.
