If you listen to Kobe Bryant talk about his hatred of AAU basketball, it really comes down to the terrible instruction many kids receive, which ultimately traces back to poor teaching. The game needs more great teachers again - people who actually understand basketball, can develop players, and genuinely care about kids.
Too much of the current culture is driven by opportunists who are in it for self-serving purposes rather than player development. Social media is filled with trainers and “coaches” building brands around themselves while kids continue to lack fundamentals, basketball IQ, accountability, and real instruction.
UCLA Legend John Wooden on being a great teammate:
"A player who makes a team great is better than a great player."
Great teammates are selfless.
• They prioritize the team.
• They look to make the team better.
• They choose to embrace their roles.
I see so many videos of players working on skills going half-speed! Yes, it’s ok to slow down to learn concepts & footwork but you don’t play 1/2 speed so don’t practice it that way. If you aren’t making mistakes in workouts you aren’t going hard enough.
Kids playing 5 games in a weekend. Coming home to high school leagues + practices.
Back to more games.
It’s a slow path away from earning the scholarship they’re chasing: overworked bodies, minimal recovery + missed opportunities for real development.
It’s a flawed approach.
Unfortunately, a large group of people sell players/ parents on the AAU basketball model of traveling all over the country to play against “the best” “on circuits,” but in reality, college coaches aren't watching, and these players are getting scammed.
If you aren't in an organization that prioritizes DEVELOPMENT, knowledge, friendships, sportsmanship, and love of the game….you are probably in the wrong spot.
This should be carefully thought about and looked into. AAU should be 1 game per day. Basketball was meant to be played once a day. Kids are exhausted, injuries are piling up, and it’s hard to get the best version of them.
I am understanding middle school bball a lot more now. U truly have to take the developmental approach. The teams that win are bigger stronger & aggressive. In HS it all levels out. Trust me on that. Just help kids improve.A few years from now, no one remembers middle school ball
Why Should Every Kid Play Sports? 🏆
The world is changing fast.
- Screens dominate.
- Soft skills are fading.
- Attention spans are shrinking.
But one thing still builds resilient, confident, and driven young people? YOUTH SPORTS.
Here are 10 reasons why every kid should play sports: Life-changing lessons that shape future leaders, doers, and winners. 👇
1. Builds Resilience and Persistence - This may be the most important in today's world. Resiliency is a skill. And kids learn this skill when they play sports. Failure is guaranteed. How you respond to failure is a lesson learned daily in sports.
2. Sacrifice Me for We - Team Sports are invaluable. They teach that the sum of the parts is more important than any individual. The power of TEAM is so vital for kids to learn. To sacrifice yourself for the greater good. Accept your role.
3. Leadership Skills - Leadership is influence. We need more leaders in our world, people who will step up and be 'doers. Team sports teach kids the importance of leadership. They learn about the good and the bad and the value of leadership.
4. Build Confidence - One of the most important skills we can teach our kids is the ability to be confident.
To have self-assurance. Sport allows kids to "be great at what they are good at." This helps them learn to use their strengths. And develop confidence.
5. Time Management Skills - A busy high school student who is balancing sports, school, and other activities can handle anything. They learn critical time management skills that set them up for success later in life. This is a big reason why most CEOs were athletes.
6. Better Academically - All of the studies prove this. Student-athletes do better in school. Kids learn to manage so many things, and they are more likely to achieve in school. A huge reason to participate.
7. Social Skills - The social dynamics of team sports are powerful. And kids learn from the good and the bad that can happen. But these skills are life. And kids learn social skills that prepare them for life.
8. Physical Well-Being - Research has proven the positive benefits of physical exercise. Active kids are happy and successful kids. Exercise is powerful, especially in our social media world.
9. Habit of Commitment - This one is big. What is learned when one commits to a sport is incredibly important. The dedication. The daily grind. The habits. The ability to commit to something consistently over time is a skill that reaps big benefits in the future.
10. Prepare for LIFE - Finally, team sports are the ultimate lab setting for LIFE. Sports create many opportunities to learn skills that will be incredibly important when kids reach adulthood. This is why those who participate in team sports become leaders in their careers.

Regardless of how good you were this season, don’t ever underestimate how much better you can get in 8-9 months. With a strategic, precise skill development plan & a strength/conditioning plan that works on the right things, you can come into the new season a much better player!
Parents gotta chill. Don’t worry about players in 6th,7th,8th, and 9th grades being bigger and stronger. All of that will level out in due time. Just learn the game and work on your skills. Think long term. Slow and steady.
Success in high school basketball isn't only measured by the score at the end of the game. It's about developing leadership, perseverance, and a love for the grind. Those who understand this will always find a way to succeed, on and off the court. 🏀
You don’t HAVE to play AAU as an underclassman. Colleges are NOT recruiting HS freshman or sophomores. You’re paying all this money to play on court G21 at 8:00am when there will be no college coaches there. Get in the weight room, work on your skills. Save money!
If your coach holds you accountable, you are VERY fortunate. A lot of coaches accept their players doing whatever they want, whenever they want with no consequences. Discipline/responsibility/accountability are life prep! If your coach cares that much, you’re lucky so respect it!
