As someone who loves debugging problems and finding out what's really going on, followed by hopefully how to fix it:
One of the most valuable things to learn is what's worth your time. This wasn't. I poked a little and moved on. It may sound small, but it's important to do.
Okay several people asked me what happens here on the side. In short: I'm not sure. But it makes git very angry for that branch and refs. Even manually editing/deleting refs I couldn't get it back to working.
I grabbed a laptop to finish, merged the PR, and never looked back.
