In 1851, Louisiana physician Dr. Samuel A. Cartwright claimed that the desire of enslaved Black people to escape captivity was a mental illness. He gave this fabricated diagnosis the name "drapetomania," combining Greek words related to running away and madness. There was no scientific evidence behind the claim. It was not a real medical condition, but rather an attempt to use the language of medicine to defend slavery and portray the natural human desire for freedom as a disease.

The idea reflected the racist beliefs of the time rather than any legitimate medical understanding. By labeling resistance to slavery as mental illness, supporters of slavery sought to reinforce the false narrative that enslaved people were naturally suited for bondage and that anyone who sought freedom must be irrational.

The reality was the exact opposite. Every person who escaped slavery was demonstrating one of the most basic human instincts: the desire to live with dignity, autonomy, and freedom. Men, women, and children risked everything to flee plantations, often traveling hundreds of miles under the cover of darkness. Many relied on networks such as the Underground Railroad, while others escaped through remarkable acts of courage and determination despite the constant threat of capture.

Today, drapetomania is remembered as a pseudoscientific theory and a stark reminder of how prejudice can distort science. Historians cite it as an example of scientific racism, where false theories were used to legitimize discrimination and oppression. Studying these ideas is important because it helps us understand how misinformation can be used to support injustice when it goes unchallenged.

Here is the question that European civilization has never answered:

At what point, in the five hundred years of colonial practice, should a European person have been expected to know that what was happening was wrong?

Not 1945. That is too easy, and too convenient.

1904, when the German Empire issued a written extermination order against the Herero people and generals carried it out and soldiers followed orders and administrators recorded the deaths and the skulls were shipped to universities for racial science.

At that point, should someone have known?

1890, when the systematic amputations in the Congo were being photographed by missionaries and the photographs were being published in European newspapers and reformers were raising the alarm and Leopold II was receiving those reformers in his palace and explaining that the civilizing mission required certain difficult measures.

At that point?

1830, when the Trail of Tears was a policy debated in the United States Congress and approved by elected representatives and challenged by lawyers and litigated to the Supreme Court, which ruled against it, and then carried out anyway.

At that point?

1619?

1492?

The question matters because the defense of European civilization against the charge that the Holocaust was colonialism coming home always rests on the assumption that colonial violence was invisible, unexamined, a product of its time.

It was not invisible.

It was photographed and debated and reported and litigated.

It was chosen.

At every decision point, by specific people with names and offices and moral agency, the choice was made to continue.

The Holocaust produced Nuremberg because the victims were European and the defendants were the enemies of the victorious powers.

The colonial period produced nothing comparable because the victims were not European and the defendants were the victorious powers.

That is the only reason one has a trial and the other has a museum of natural history.

Same civilization.

Same logic.

Different documentation.

Aimé Césaire wrote it in 1950 and Europe has been trying to ignore it ever since.

In Discourse on Colonialism, he stated plainly: what the "very distinguished, very humanistic, very Christian bourgeois of the twentieth century" found unforgivable about Hitler was not what he did.

It was to whom he did it.

Hitler applied to European people the methods that Europe had been applying to African and Asian people for centuries.

The dehumanization.
The racial hierarchy.
The biological categorization that placed some human beings outside the protections extended to others.
The organized, bureaucratic, industrialized killing.

None of that was new.

The novelty was the victims.

When Léopold II ran the Congo as a personal extraction enterprise and killed an estimated ten million people — when his agents cut off the hands of Congolese workers who did not meet their rubber quotas, when they took photographs of the severed hands arranged in rows, European civilization was not seized by an unprecedented moral crisis.

It was a business story.

A question of colonial administration.

A management problem in a distant place populated by people whose deaths registered as statistics, when they registered at all.

Hitler's crime, in European memory, was not the method.

It was the application of the method to people Europe had decided were people.

That decision, who counts, is what Césaire was writing about.

It has not been adequately answered.

Whether you are looking at them.

Every culture war battle that occupies your attention is attention not aimed upward.

Every tribal conflict that produces genuine outrage, genuine grief, genuine investment in defeating the other side, that is energy that is not organizing, not striking, not asking who owns the building, not noticing that the liberal politician and the conservative politician both got rich in office and both vote the same way when the defense budget comes up.

They are not on opposite sides of the culture war.

They are the people running it.

From the same suite.

With the same broker.

Watching you fight and calling it "democracy."

The most telling thing about American political culture is what is never on the menu.

You can vote for the party that wants to bomb six countries or the party that wants to bomb six countries while feeling bad about it.

You can vote for the party that gives tax cuts to billionaires while cutting social programs, or the party that gives tax cuts to billionaires while expanding one social program, slowly, after a decade of negotiation, in a form the insurance industry approves of.

You can have the culture war from the right or the culture war from the left.

You cannot vote for a candidate who says: the military budget will be cut in half and the money will be spent on housing and healthcare and the forty million Americans living in poverty.

That candidate does not appear on your television.

That candidate does not receive institutional funding.

That candidate, if they emerge anyway, is described by the media, left and right, as unserious. Naive. Extreme.

The Overton window is not a natural phenomenon.

It is maintained by the people who benefit from the options it contains.

And the one option it has never contained, in living American political memory, is the option that would actually change who pays for the empire.

The culture war is not a malfunction of American democracy.

It is a feature of American empire.

While the State Department was funding opposition media in Venezuela, American media was running wall-to-wall coverage of which bathroom transgender people should use.

While the CIA was training civil society organizations to destabilize governments in Eastern Europe, American workers were being told that the reason their wages hadn't moved in thirty years was immigration.

While the Pentagon was spending $300 million on a single failed program in Syria, American teachers were buying their own classroom supplies and working second jobs.

The noise was never accidental.

The noise was the point.

A population fighting each other over the cultural battlefields the ruling class assigned them cannot simultaneously look upward at the people assigning the battlefields.

That is not a conspiracy theory.

That is a management strategy.

It has a budget. It has architects. It has decades of documented results.

And the first sign that it is working is that the people inside it call anyone who describes it a conspiracy theorist.
