The Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (HKETO) was once a symbol of trade; it has become a hub for surveillance. Evidence and news reports below:

Hong Kongers who fled repression are being followed, photographed, and threatened on British streets.

Why do we still grant this office special status? Why do we allow it to exploit diplomatic protection to repress people in the UK?

In 30 seconds Chloe utterly destroys the ignorant and dangerous argument that Chinese embassies aren’t a real and present risk to dissidents in the UK. Worth your time. 🙇♂️

*Urgent Request to Permanently Halt Permission for the Proposed Chinese Embassy at Royal Mint Court*
Dear Prime Minister,
We, a coalition of community and human rights organisations…
✊Don’t Let Them Stand Alone
Veteran activists Lee Cheuk Yan and Chow Hang Tung have spent over four years behind bars, not for any crime, but for remembering Tiananmen. Their trial is a political persecution. It’s a trial against every #Hongkonger who once lit a candle in Victoria Park. It is a trial against our shared conscience and belief in justice.
This Saturday, join us in London to show them they are not forgotten.

📅8 November 2025, Saturday
📍Embassy of China, 49 Portland Place, London W1B 1JL
Three pro-democracy leaders in #HongKong could be jailed for 10 years as they go on trial on 11 November.
Trade unionist Lee Cheuk-yan, human rights lawyer Chow Hang-tung and democratic politician Albert Ho are charged with inciting subversion under Beijing’s “National Security Law” for protests and vigils upholding the memory of the Tiananmen Square massacre and the 1989 democracy movement.
Against authoritarianism rising in Hong Kong and worldwide, join our protest, led by trade unionists in solidarity with our comrades:
✊FREE Lee Cheuk-yan, Chow Hang-tung, Albert Ho and all political prisoners!
✊Freedom of association, rights to protest and organise unions and political opposition in Hong Kong, China and around the world!

Another protest against the proposed Chinese mega-embassy in London: This weekend, Sat, Aug 23, 2pm, from HKETO to Whitehall. (Previous protests, involving thousands, were at the proposed site, Royal Mint Court.) The UK gov't is supposed to decide on the proposal before Sep 9.
HRF stands with exiled Hong Kong activist @carmenkamanlau, who was reportedly asked by UK police to cease any risky activities after her neighbors received bounty letters asking for information on her. HRF believes the request is effectively a demand for "self-censorship" and a "retreat from public life." We demand host governments protect, not suppress, voices targeted by authoritarian surveillance.
Government plans to reintroduce extradition cooperation with Hong Kong are highly concerning.
Why does the Government deem this reasonable when freedom of expression, political freedom and the rule of law in Hong Kong have been crushed by The National Security Law and the extradition of Hong Kongers to mainland China made possible?
I urge the Government to give urgent reassurances on how this system will be safely managed and what protections will be put in place to ensure no Hong Konger, CCP critic or anyone targeted by the CCP will be extradited under the new arrangement.
1/This week, I was invited by a number of media outlets, including Al Jazeera, DW News and France 24, to explain the disbandment of the League of Social Democrats and the future of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy movement. Link here (France 24): https://t.co/ph2mLa0ehH
