Just to add to the point, there were several times where we lived off of a bag of flour and a small bottle of vegetable oil for a few days while we were moving, rebuilding, or down to our last when I was a kid. I've done it myself as an adult. The newly poor don't know this stuff

If you have access to a working kitchen & have the capacity to use it, in the US as in most countries, it's simply cheaper to cook for yourself.

I think what it is is the newly poor lack the knowledge of how to build a back stock & staples pantry while poor. That is a learned skill that's usually passed down in the generationally poor. My mom & grandmas, who were poverty level, taught me.

I saw how my formerly middle class roommates struggled with food access when I was a young adult. They thought eating out was cheaper too. I had to teach them how to shop, cook, & build a pantry while poor.
